Lack of J upgrades on SQ

I could not see that it had recently been discussed, so my apologies if I have missed a post.

I am referring to how Velocity Rewards members cannot use VA points to upgrade to J on SQ.

It shows the lack of benefits due to VA's failure to join an alliance such as *.

Unsatisfactory, even at the ripoff points conversion rates that SQ would doubtless demand.

Given that SQ is now advertising cheap fares ex Oz in Y, it must be finding it hard to fill sufficient seats to meet its targets. Is there any chance of this VA - SQ 'no J upgrade' policy changing?

Correct me if I am wrong, but with QF can't you only upgrade with points if flying on their metal, and they are part of an alliance.

Very few airlines offer upgrade on other airlines

Is available
- on AA/BA/IB with higher priced economy fares using AA/BA/IB upgrade instruments
- on some high priced BA tickets with Asia Miles
- on some (but not all) Star Alliance airlines with higher priced Y & B fare (many people on FT state is very limited & expensive)

Yeah but at least Qantas fly a number of long haul routes give you more chances to upgrade, VA leave most of their routes to their alliance partners :-/

bullerdude, yes, that's the essential difference.

VA emphasises its partners but unfortunately when it comes to the fine print, Velocity Rewards members cannot upgrade to J on SQ despite VA not flying on its own metal to a stack of Asian destinations.

I don't follow that the inability to use points to upgrade on partner airlines is necessarily a failing of not joining an alliance. Plenty of other reasons that not joining an alliance is bad for the frequent traveller, but the *A points upgrades on other *A carriers is a very limited (and expensive) thing to take advantage of.
