Hello all. 1st time poster here.
Am wondering if anyone can help? I am considering taking the plunge and buying enough dividend miles in order to go japan at xmas (J class). From reading how difficult it is obtaining awards with Qantas, I am looking at cathay. I have checked kvs and although seats are available outbound (via HK), there seems to be no availability inbound, around jan 20; really nothing available until late Jan. Does anyone have any idea of why this is so? I don't want to buy the miles if there is no chance I will be able to get tickets. Would also consider JAL but it doesn"t come up as an option for Oworld. I know US Air is no longer *Alliance, but is it still possible to redeem points for awards on SQ?
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks.:)

The short answer is yes.

From US Airways site:

Can I redeem Dividend Miles for travel on Star Alliance member airlines and US Airways' other airline partners?
We exited the Star Alliance on March 30, 2014 so you can no longer redeem Dividend Miles on Star Alliance member airlines. However we will continue partnerships with some partner airlines, so you’ll continue to earn and redeem miles when traveling on Aegean, Air China, Air New Zealand, Avianca, EVA Air, Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TACA, TAM, TAP Portugal and Turkish Airlines.

Not sure how hard or easy it would be to go about though.

SQ needs to be booked by 31 July, Eva by May 14, NZ by June 29

Thanks Doggy and Markis10.
I will stop dithering and just buy some miles. I will try the SQ route. Otherwise just wait it out until Cathay release more award space.

Dont forget Avianca, their promos for 2x are every two months on average.
