Hi

As an ex Qantas employee I am used to getting industry discounts for hotel. I have decided to take an AirAsia cheapy to KL I need to stay at a reasonably priced hotel (~$100 per night) in Kuala Lumpur and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Thanks

Hotel prices in KL tend to vary wildly depending on their occupancy rates. The swing seems to be higher in KL than many other places. So its really going to depend on the dates you are wanting to stay. You may be able to get a reasonable hotel for around MYR300/night, but the same rooms may be MYR600 the next week.

All the places I have stayed in KL have been more than your suggested limit. But I have stayed at the Hilton at Petaling Jaya for that rate. Its a short walk to the PJ train station that will take you back through Sentral and into the main city areas very cheaply.

I have seen pretty good prices at times at the Renaissance (east wing is cheaper and quite nice) which is in a reasonable location near monorail and MRT stations and a short walk to KLCC. But under MYR300 may be pushing it a little. Look for special weekend rates and pre-paid rates for best deals.

Try Novotel KL. It's right in Bukit Bintang which is the heart of KL, and opposite The Pavillion. It's next to JW Marriott and Westin.

I usually get it at <MYR$200 per night. I find the quality similar to other novotels, if not better.

You'll find it really hard to find a decent (and safely located) hotel for MYR$100. BUt if you're looking for something that's around AUD$100, you'll be fine. Something if you're lucky (like during off peak) you could even get the Westin at around MYR$300-400.

Location definitely a plus. Depends on what you are looking for really.

In reply to benhadi, having stayed at the westin (and therefore close to the Novotel) recently, I can vouch for the location. You have the Pavillion right across the road, and it is only a 5 minute walk to Petronas towers. It is also close to the train station which gets you to China Town if that interests you.

Heading off to the Hilton PJ tonight, it is up there with my favourite in KL. It has train access relatively close by and I don't mind what it has to offer.

My advice from hotels in KL is stay away from the Palace of the Golden Horses (if price permits). For such a highly rated hotel, the service was poor, and it takes forever to get back into KLCC by taxi. In saying this you can barter the taxi's over there to get you in for around 25RM to 30RM.

Hope that helps

Kuala Lumpur Hotels Guide and Travel Information usually has some good deals. Check out the Ais Asia web site too as they have some hotels with pay 1 or 2 nights and get the 2nd or 3rd nite free deals.

I can recommend:

The Capitol Hotel
The Royale Bintang

They are both in Bukit Bintang so conveniently located for shopping and eating out.

I've recently booked a trip to KL using AirAsia for mid-late August.

I booked Hotel Istana for A$97 per night including breakfast via Agoda.com. Price includes all taxes and fees ($77 per night without the additional fees).

Expedia.com.au also gives the same rate.

Never been there before but rated quite well amongst travelers via TripAdvisor.com. It was mainly due to the reviews and the price that I settled and booked this hotel.

It's located in the Golden Triangle area.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have booked the Novotel because of its location and the fact that we are going to go up the towers. I did this on a unrestricted rate ($10 more) so that i can have another look just before i go to see if there are any great deals.

I always stay at the Concorde Hotel in KL. Close to the towers, very good service, good rooms and I pay around $87 a night. Rate is 218++ per night for the superior room or MYR188++ for a normal room. Just call them to get that rate ++ means plus 5% tax and 10% service charge.

They have the best breakfast I have ever seen (im not that well travelled, but many say the breakfast is the deal maker and I agree).

Westin KL has a killer breakfast. They've got a "super-food" section (which is a hybrid-type of food made up of all healthy stuff - i don't fancy it that much but my Mrs does).

They also close their in-house gourmet bakery store for the public and use it as part of the breakfast buffet - so basically you got the whole bakery at your disposal.

That's A LOT of selection, and that's just the bakery.

If you're staying in Novotel, i recommend you walk next door and try their breakfast. Give yourself at least an hour or two. You won't regret it.

And i agree - breakfast is either a deal maker or breaker. For Westin KL, definitely a deal maker.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I use Asiarooms to book my hotels, they are excellent and cheap. I have stayed at Grand Millennium, Traders and Shangri-La. I love Shangri-La the best because of:
1. Breakfast - I had the access to the breakfast at the cafe as well as Horizon Club. So I actually get to pig out on breakfast twice....
2. The view, I had a room facing the towers.
3. Service.
4. Room (Horizon Club floor) - they are bigger than Traders (Club Floor) and Grand Millennium.

Well try Nikko hotel, i'm not sure how much it cost but when I stay there I get upgraded into the suite and it was just wonderful. there is a bus that goes to the Twin tower, u can walk there as well about 10 minutes. there is a food stall that open 24 hours and the mee foreng (fried noodle) is nice and cheap!!!

I have stayed here and couldn't agree more - plan to spend your morning there - you wont need to eat for the rest of the day (just roll around KL because you ate too much!)

The westin is in such a great spot too! Buy an all day pass to the light rail (station just up the street) and you can explore the whole city easily.

The Gardens hotel and the Boulevard Hotel in Mid Valley are also great value for your dollar. We normally stay there because the shopping mall there has a fantastic variety of stores. Its 10 mins from BB and all of the stuff you need downtown. Why pay double for something similar in the Golden triangle when you can save and spend on things like food and shopping.

The Palace of the Golden Horses is too far from the city to stay for a few nights, but my wife and I stayed for one night just for the experience, and it was pretty good for the price (about 330MYR). The breakfast was brilliant, perhaps the biggest I have ever seen. The resort itself is something to behold, even though it is in need of a facelift.

In KL city, we stayed at the Impiana Hotel and Spa. The room was about 300MYR. Brekky was brilliant - fresh, huge, good variety, and the service was great. The location is brilliant too, less than 5 min from Petronas Towers, and 5 mins the other direction for more top class shopping. You are right across the road from the big park in the middle of KL too, which was a nice place to take a stroll in the morning. The pool on the 5th or 6th level was really nice as well, particularly with the KL heat and humidity.
