There was an older thread on this topic, however there doesn't seem to have been much recent information on the comparison between these two properties, so I'm wondering if anyone has any recent experience at either (or both)? The conclusion a few years ago seemed to be that the Doubletree represented better value for money (or points) and was better located for leisure travelers. However I know that things can change and properties can age or fall behind, so if anyone has any comments on the current state of either of these I'd very much appreciate it. I've not got elite status with Hilton, so those benefits would probably not be of much use at this stage.

many thanks

Doubletree is better location and value, especially if you are using HH points. Exec lounges in both are good. I make my decision based on price alone

Have not stayed at Hilton though some tell me it is 'better' than Doubletree. I had a recent 5 or 6 night stay at DT and it was just fine. I'll skip any elite benefits as you've said they do not matter. Rooms are not huge but quite adequate and modern. There is a supermarket (incl. liquour) in the basement of the building, as well as plenty of eating options. Ampang Park rail station is a 5 minute covered walk away and only 6 stations from KL Sentral (if you get a train from the airport to KL Sentral it is quite easy to transfer to a local train to Ampang Park, luggage notwithstanding). That said, Hilton is located easy walking distance from KL Sentral. Taxis, of course, are cheap, though you must get them to turn the meter on unless you know the price you should pay. It really depends on what you want to do as to which is better located...certainly I would say the Hilton seems better located to a number of areas, but so is DT, and it just depends where you want to go. If price is the main factor I would say go with DT (though do check, weird things happen sometimes and Hilton could be cheaper at times). I said I wouldn't mention benefits but the EL at DT is pretty good, though it gets crowded at times.

We stayed at Doubletree Hilton last year - booked through Helloworld - it didn't cost that much, compared to what we are used to paying, and we were delighted.

Having the supermarket downstairs - as noted by Taupekastar above - was very handy for drinks and ice creams in that hot weather, as well as for snacks. On the level above the supermarket there are a very large number of inexpensive eating places where you buy a meal and go grab a table.

Breakfast in the hotel had three large areas with western, Chinese and Indian cuisine, and there was plenty to choose from. The only thing missing was ham and bacon.

There are plenty of restaurants under/adjacent the hotel, prices were on par with or dearer than in Australia. The Italian restaurant was amusing - it just seemed odd having pizza without any ham on it - but it tasted very good regardless.

Another feature that I hadn't expected, was that there was one bar and lounge wher smoking was permitted. And after a hot day it was great wandering down to the pool, being handed a towel and going for a dip.

Buying tickets at the underground station from their machines I found most confusing. On one trip I paid 9 ringgits each to go the one stop to Petronus towers, and the next day (with help from a local) I paid 2 ringgits each for the same trip.

Regards,
Renato

Thanks for the replies, looks like the Doubletree is a good bet here. Not planning on going for a few months yet, but I'll try and report back any findings after my stay.

Having stayed in both within the past 6 months, I think the Doubletree is quite acceptable in terms of quality.
However in my opinion the Hilton is in a better location.
The KLIA Express is fabulous - if you're arriving or leaving at a busy time of the day the train can be much quicker than a car.
It's also cheaper and has free wifi on board.
The Hilton is in a complex attached to KL Sentral - the terminus of the KLIA Express.
The Doubletree is on another train line or a 10-15 minute taxi ride away.

Oh and if you book the KLIA Express online using a mastercard you receive a discount.
Doesn't have to be in advance - I just did it on my phone while standing next to the ticket machine.

Uber worked quite well for me in each direction. MYR 88 door to door. So cheaper than the train for 2 pax.

The Doubletree was not bad. Although the wife and I had breakfast in the exec lounge every morning, until the chef said to us, 'Have you guys checked out the breakfast buffet downstairs?' We first kind of took it as an insult, like he was trying to get rid of us... until we actually went and had a look... good god. As far as breakfast food selection, it was 10,000 times better. We were kicking ourselves.

This probably does not help you but the Traders Hotel right next to KLCC was far better. Location was better, the exec lounge had a bigger range of everything with better views.

Soundawake, have you stayed at Traders or what about the Bukit Bintang hotels? JW Marriot, Westin, Grand Millenium

Can you recommend?

I thought of Kl Hilton as we have the VA hilton diamond status, but want to be in bukit bintang.

Another option Im looking at is Sunway

Will be there mid July

Hotels such as the DoubleTree and InterContinental (and no doubt others) have free regular shuttles to the Bukit Bintang (Pavilion) area.

Have not stayed at any Bukit Bintang hotels, but the Traders is but a short 10 min walk away. The Doubletree is further away. Honestly for central location, the Traders cannot be beat, in my opinion. The whole time the wife and I were at the Doubletree, we were wishing we were at the Traders.

Also FYI - just around the corner from Jalan Alor (the main noodle street next to Bukit Bintang) is Taps Beer bar, one of only two craft beer bars in KL. There is also a whiskey bar just down the street from Taps.

However - and I wish I had done this before our last trip there - google 'hidden cigar whiskey bars KL'. There are a quite a few. Once I got home and did some googling I realised I walked straight past one. You access it via a telephone booth in a shopping mall just near the Doubletree. If you're into that sort of thing, that is.

Some photos from the Traders - here is a photo I stitched together from the gym window, from memory

Traders is nice but rooms with EL access cost a bit more, versus Hilton/DT which is guaranteed with Diamond and seemingly Gold as well.
Grand Hyatt is probably the top - amazing Exec Lounge and huge suites

Quickatatus, taken the monorail and LRT many times. Accessing the monorail much improved now Nu Sentral has openes

Traders is great especially if you get a room with the twin towers view.
Bukit Bintang is close.
But it is a taxi ride.
I discovered that KL isn't really a city for walking around.

Fine to walk around.. It's hot sure..

Also lots of passageways. Eg can walk from Avenue K (northside of Jalan Ampang) - Low Yat barely going out of air con

whats the benefit of staying around the KLCC area compared with bukit bintang?

Depends what you're after.. KLCC is on the lrt, Bukit Bintang on the monorail. Both have good shopping, both have nightlife

I'm used to the tropical heat and humidity.
It isn't a friendly city for pedestrians.
A lot of the passageways are private property and close when the retail outlets close.
