We received this notification from Krisflyer today. They appear to be granting a 6 month extension of points expiring April through at least August 2020.

Thank you for your support of Singapore Airlines.
You have KrisFlyer miles that will be expiring between April and August 2020.
In view of the Covid-19 outbreak, we will be extending the validity period of your KrisFlyer miles by six months, and they will expire between October 2020 and February 2021 respectively. For example, KrisFlyer miles expiring on 30 April 2020 will now be valid until 31 October 2020 after the extension.
The extended validity of your expiring KrisFlyer miles will be reflected in your KrisFlyer account statement at the end of each respective month. Please click here for details.

Awesome news! This buys me time on some due to expire July! Haven't received the email yet.

Out of interest, does anyone's miles validity show extension in the KF account? Mine still say July at this stage.

Checked account online and it does not reflect the extended date. However reading the verbiage of the following link clearly explains it all. If the miles are due to expire in July the extension will be reflected in your statement for the previous month, in your case will be the June statement.

Extension of Expiring KrisFlyer Miles

  1. Which expiring KrisFlyer miles are eligible for extension?

KrisFlyer miles expiring between April and August 2020 will be extended by six months and will be valid till October 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
  2. I have paid service fees to extend my miles previously. Are these miles eligible for extension too?

Yes, as a one-time goodwill gesture, all miles that are expiring between April and August 2020 will be extended for 6 months, including those that have been extended once previously.
  3. I logged into my account and noticed that my expiring KrisFlyer miles have not been extended.

The extended validity of your expiring KrisFlyer miles will be reflected in your account progressively, at the end of each month, before the miles expire. For example, if you have miles expiring on 30 April 2020, you will be able to see that the miles have been extended and are valid till 31 October 2020 in May 2020. Please log in here to view if you have expiring KrisFlyer miles.
  4. Can I extend the validity of the extended KrisFlyer miles for use beyond the new expiry month?

Yes, the extended KrisFlyer miles can be further extended beyond the new expiry month. The miles extension fees will apply for such requests, via payment using miles or a nominal service fee. For KrisFlyer members, you may extend the miles for a further 6 months beyond the new expiry date while KrisFlyer Elite-tiered members may extend it for a further 12 months. Please click here for more information.
  5. When will the extension of my expiring KrisFlyer miles take place?

Table 2: Extension of expiring KrisFlyer miles
Current KrisFlyer miles expiry month:Extension of miles will take place in:Extended KrisFlyer miles expiry month:
    April 2020End AprilOctober 2020

    July 2020End JulyJanuary 2021
    August 2020End AugustFebruary 2021
  6. How can I view the extended validity of my KrisFlyer miles?

You can log in to your KrisFlyer profile on singaporeair.com or the SingaporeAir mobile app and click on Miles > Miles Validity. There will be a monthly breakdown of your miles expiring in the next 12 months.

At the end of each month, you will be able to see 2 transactions in your account statement. The first transaction will show expiring miles being debited from your account with the description "Service debit for 6 months mileage extension". The second transaction will show the same number of expiring miles being credited back into your account with the description "Service credit for 6 months mileage extension".
  7. I have miles that have been extended to expire in October 2020. As I would like to use the miles for a flight redemption, must my flight redemption also be completed by end October 2020?

You will need to redeem your miles and ensure that the redemption booking is successfully ticketed on or before 31 October 2020. Your travel date can be after October 2020.
  8. I have miles expiring in September 2020 and beyond. Will these upcoming expiring miles be extended as well?

We will be extending for miles expiring between April to August 2020. As the situation remains fluid, we will continue to monitor and review this closer to date.

Well that is helpful as it saves us paying a fee to extend the miles.

Despite the extension granted by Singapore Airlines, expiring points are going to be a serious issue for those of us sitting on lots of points.
Despite the ability to book a year in advance, I suspect overseas travel will be impossible or difficult ( ie requiring quarantine on return). Looking at Covid numbers overseas, Australian authorities would be foolish to permit travel within 1-2 years.

One of the options discussed, but not listed is to become PPS. Although this requires actually paying for premium cabin flights ( something many here are allergic to...), the benefits are fantastic to avoid points expiring. It sounds as though becoming PPS will grant all your precious points a 4 year extension. One year while you are a PPS and then when you loose the PPS status ( as you will not want to pay for it for more than one year), you get the points for a further 3 years.
Paying to become PPS ( especially if tax deductible) may be worth it for some.

It would be an option, but to qualify you need to spend SGD25000, excluding taxes. That would be the equivalent of 4 business class return tickets on SQ from Australia to Europe, in a year. Which could be tough going during the pandemic.

You'd need to be sitting on a bunch of points to make that worthwhile.

I have a flight booked for October with points that are about to expire. Anyone had experience with cancelling a flight and what happens to this points at the moment?

I am also interested if anyone has already been through this as we have a booking in December that is very unlikely to go ahead with points that would otherwise have expired in June.

Now that Team ScoMo has declared no International travel until 'late 2021', all those SQ miles with hard 3 year expiries were looking at risk... but SQ has just announced the latest extension of points validity for points expiring Jan '21 - Jun 21 by 6 months.

This makes a big difference for me as that accounts for over 500K. Well done and thank you KF!

  • Extending KrisFlyer miles that will be expiring between April and December 2020 by six months.
  • Extending KrisFlyer miles that will be expiring between January and June 2021 by six months. [NEW]

Yes most welcome. But with points refunded, points earnt and some points moved from Virgin pre-liquidation (though these expire later) I have just over 2 million points that in the main probably will need to be redeemed sometime in 2021. Admittedly this can, and most likely, will be for flights in 2022, but originally that should have been for 3 or 4 years worth of holiday flights for my wife and I. So I suspect that the daughters will now benefit more than I originally intended.

Just to confirm... all these expiry dates are 'rolling'? So points due to expire in 2020 that were extended to late to 2020 under the first extension, will now be extended again?

Cheers! As the author mentions, it is a little confusing, especially when you get an email still listing the current/previous expiry date!

However unlikely, I am hoping for a points expiry extension beyond the normal 3 years plus 6 months (paid). An extra 6 months would come in handy.
I would hope so. I totally regret transferring all my credit card points over to SQ only to learn that after paying to extend once there is no other action

I just looked at extending for six months and it quoted me almost SGD$200 to extend..disgusting Singapore Airlines!

I did not expect to have to pay almost $200 to extend my miles for six months...especially as there is no guarantee when we will be flying again

There's no fee to extend the expiry under this promotion. If you wish to extend your miles beyond the covid extension, you will need to pay.

Logic has prevailed with the additional 6-month extension, but seriously, the fixed 3-year expiry term is outdated and archaic. It might work OK for those transferring credit card points as needed, but how is the average frequent flyer supposed to save up for any substantial rewards (e.g. F to LHR) in under 3 years? Let alone the issues around being unable to travel at the moment. SQ really should look at changing the way miles expire altogether, as many other airlines have done recently.

The fact that your points expire is more than archaic. I will NEVER transfer to kris fler again.

I'm really glad that AFF has taken up the issue of KrisFlyer points expiry. As mature (aka 70+) leisure flyers, we find it difficult to get enough points to actually obtain any worthwhile flights or upgrades. I've contacted SIA a few times but only got unhelpful generic responses. A few years ago, I discovered that even KrisFlyer memberships could expire! Please keep up the pressure.
