I have quite a lot of KF miles and I am planning a trip for 4 to the US in 2016. What is my best option? If I fly with SQ it would mean flying to NRT then LAX which I dont feel is very efficient.

What are the other options?

I have around 220k qantas miles but that isn't enough for 4 pax J class.

I have like 600k KF miles.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't comment how the chances of securing 4 award seats on the one flight however you can use your KF points to book partner airline awards, such as with United Airlines.

The points required one way from Australia to USA is 97,500 points per person plus around $600 in taxes.

We are visiting Cuba again next year and thought it would be much easier going via Canada than the USA, so we paid 97,500 each to get to Toronto (there are direct flights to a handful of Cuban destinations from there) rather than flying Sydney-Singapore-Asia-Los Angeles or San Francisco - then Mexico/Canada/Central America - Cuba. The long way with Singapore Airlines would have been 85,000 points.

Are those points you are quoting for Business class?

Is it worth converting to velocity and flying with virgin?

Another AFFer flew SIN-FRA-JFK so perhaps you could add a leg from Oz. It is a long route but we are AFFers after all.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You're pretty unlikely to find 4 J reward seats on VA or any airline Aus-US. It's a notoriously difficult route for awards. You're going to need to be creative. Flying on different days, or different airlines, or a combination of those will probably be necessary. You're also will likely be short of KF points depending on routing. A combination of paid flights with awards will help both issues. Do you have a cash budget for flights?

I would investigate using a combination of QF points/SQ>VA points booking Hawiian/cash to get to HNL (JQ J is not ideal, but the availability is ok), then use SQ points on United from HNL to mainland US which gives you a lot more options as they have a number of destinations from HNL and each award is 30k in J. I don't know what United availability is like, so that's an unknown you'll need to look into.

Happy searching !
