Koala Airlines Discussion

Just wow, but at the same time not overly that surprised that they are facing failure before a single flight has taken off. Would have to be the fastest wind-up / liquidation of an airline ever if the initiators (former co-backers?) application is successful.

One thing it would have had in common with Bonza is it would burn similar amounts of cash.

I recall Jayne Hrdlicka said in a speech after the collapse that $300-$400m of new capital is required for a startup, to get to a breakeven point.

That’s a lot of cash to throw around to reach a point in which doesn’t even guarantee you will still make money from then onwards. Airlines are just terrible investments.

Maybe they will be a hybrid airline , there is one in South Korea Air Premia.

Air Premia is a wide-body only carrier though, and their service is more in line with JetBlue, largely full service on their Long Haul flights, with some BoB elements on their Short Haul flights.

The media is all agog albeit with conflicting reports. The airline says they are not going down the price cut path but Seven news is touting a new budget carrier.

The airline says they are not releasing any info on destinations or aircraft type but Aust Aviation is convinced they are getting 3 Max8s from some renderings they have and punting the destinations.

To be fair REX (and Hazelton and Kendall before it) operated for far longer than those others you mention. I'm not sure they belong in the same category TBH.
 
Leasing costs for new MAX 8 are something stupid like 600k/month at the moment, AUD. These days there is no cheap ‘deals’.

Seen large spikes in all other areas be it engineering, ground ops, airport fees, and obviously wages. Fuel is about the only area that has somewhat kept itself at bay, but that’s still a large cost regardless.
 
I feel like taking crazy pills saying this but with all this hubbub about no competition in the Australian airline industry, could Qantas be supporting Koala as a permanently in-the-future market entrant to keep regulators happy?
