KF Redemption - fare or upgrade

I am new to this but thanks to AFF community for all the great information.
My question is what is the concensus on the best use of KF miles - full fare or upgrade? I'm flying PER-SIN-NRT later in the year and this will be my first flight with SQ.

Personally I never see the value in paying for the upgrade. The miles cost is the same. I always just search out the Saver awards for the route I want.

One of the other challenges of SQ upgrades is that you need to purchase an economy seat in an expensive fare bucket to be eligible for a miles upgrade.
