Keyboard as checked luggage

Hello folks,

I'm thinking of bringing my keyboard (digital piano) with me overseas, however couldn't figure out whether I'll be able to check it in when flying Qantas. The item is 140x20x40cm (=200cm) and is beyond the stated 158cm limit. In terms of weight it's fine (10kg) and I've got plenty of allowance being WP. Anyone knows if they'll carry it (with or without extra charge)?

It seems that Jetstar (according to their website) will happily take it (as bulky item shorter than 2 metres), while Qantas (no mention of bulky item in their website except for sports equipment) won't?

Other airlines e.g. Emirates happily take up to 300cm total dimension and Singapore airlines take any item shorter than 200cm. I also have carried skis with Qantas (180cm long) without problem, so I know it's not a technical limitation.

I took a bicycle last year as checked luggage and people often take surfboards, so I can see no reason why you can't take your keyboards. In BNE there is an oversize baggage check-in area so I'm sure there is the same wherever you are.

You should be fine to take it - it will go through as oversize, probably no extra cost. In terms of protection though you might want to consider getting the luggage wrapping service at BNE (Protectabag) to bubble wrap and then stretch wrap it. Will give it good protection against what is often pretty rough treatment.

Sorry for bringing up this subject again but just looking for a little confirmation,

I am thinking about taking a tough plastic storage box in the hold on a domestic flight, dimensions are 76x53x30=159cm (domestic dimensions are 140cm, will they allow this but need to go through oversize baggage or will they reject it?

Reason is I would rather take 1 box versus splitting it into 2 bags.

Reason I am asking is it is not a thing like musical instrument/sports equipment so may come under different rules?

Probably not possible today, but ~7 years ago we moved to Switzerland and put my wife's electric piano in my snowboard case (with my snowboard) and got away with it being "sports equipment".

That was flying BA though - and back when you could buy extra baggage "per bag" rather than by weight (awesome when you're taking half a dozen bags ).
