I just returned from Kentucky yesterday, where I visited my daughter who is currently residing there. If anyone has an itinerary with nearby destinations in late April, I can highly recommend adding in 'Thunder Over Louisville' for a fantastic day out. 'Thunder Over Louisville' features one of the US's top airshows and largest fireworks display and kicks off the Kentucky Derby Festival each year. There are heaps of attractions and things to do until the finale of the Kentucky Derby horse race.

Being with the 'locals' we had the know-how of how to get a great position for viewing and early Saturday morning, our tarp was laid staking our territory for our return later in the day. We headed toward the city at about 1pm and it took us about 15 minutes to find a free carpark (the closer to the waterfront, the more expensive the carparking is, up to $60 for the day) and we walked about 15 minutes to our spot on the Ohio River waterfront lawn with full esky and wagon with camp chairs, food, etc,. and settled in for the show.

The playlist for the airshow is below and commenced at 3pm.

All of the flyby's were fantastic, but my favourites were definitely the military jets going ballistic towards the heavens.

Here are some pics of the airshow, with photo credit to my D.I.L.

With the airshow finished, it was time for the fireworks. A fantastic display with fireworks off the bridge and barges on the Ohio River. Easily the best I've ever seen.

The only downside to this event was the road blocks after the show. All access to the freeways and side streets are blocked off until 11:30pm, which even the locals don't understand. It took us about 1 and a half hours to move about 5 miles. It is recommended to sit it out, relax and have a couple more drinks before heading home if your driving.
