Big 50 for the Wallaby air route

South African Airways, the first foreign airline to regularly service Western Australia, is celebrating 50 years since its historic first flight across the Indian Ocean.

It was November 25 1957 when flight SA 280 finally touched down in Perth after a 21-hour flight from Johannesburg.

The so-called Wallaby route originally included stopovers in Mauritius and the Cocos Islands before finally landing in Perth.

Half a century later, SA 280 remains the code for flights between Perth and the South African city but thankfully the piston-powered Douglas DC-7 is no longer in use and the flight on the Airbus A340-200 is now non-stop.
