The so-called “Ryanair jacket” could soon make an appearance in Australia as Jetstar moves to ensure customers stay within their free carry-on baggage allowance.
Jetstar says an upcoming six-month trial of “cabin baggage officers” at a number of major Australian ports is about ensuring passengers are within the maximum allowable size and weight limits for carry-on luggage. They will also “assist” customers who need to have their bags checked in if they are too big or too heavy.
That move to “assist” passengers may give the airline a boost to its already healthy ancillary revenues, as passengers with excess carry-on pay to check in bags at the gate or decide to pre-purchase check-in luggage during the booking process to be on the safe side.
Jetstar is already one of the best airlines in terms of generating ancillary revenues, according to an IdeaWorks Company report published in July 2014. The report said Jetstar had 20.6 per cent of its total revenue come from ancillary revenue in 2013, the seventh highest among the 59 carriers surveyed.

Good. About time!

Tiger at OOL seem to really police the cabin bags at the gate. Interesting that jq are going to hire people specifically for the job.

More like revenue collection officers, maybe they are sharing staff with the local council's parking rangers dept!

Correction - the Qantas group are going to hire people to do the job Aussie_flyer ;)

Maybe they could walk down a few gates and get Priority Boarding working properly for QF if they have spare time?

With the costs for said officers booked under QFi and the revenue booked under JQ of course! ;)

Will be interesting to witness passengers reactions at Airports coming up in the next 6 months.
I have seen this type of carry-on luggage policing in action at numerous European Airports with LCC Ryanair & Wizzair..... Let's just say things get quite heated when one is told to cough up cash for checking in a bag.

They're clearly doing this just to assist the passengers... :p

They might look at customer feedback after the 6 month trial, but I suspect the main factor they will use to decide whether to continue with this will be whether the new baggage officers generate more revenue for JQ in extra baggage fees etc. than JQ has to pay them.

I note Ryanair chose to get rid of penalising passengers for minor infractions on HLO in the last year, figuring out it's best not to p¡ss customers off.

That said, those that go well above their limits should be penalised. It's a fine line.

I've not had any such problems at OOL on QF.

Agreed!

A lot has changed at Ryanair in the past 18 months. Michael O'leary has become a bit of a softy with many harsh company policies gone & surprisingly some good initiatives in place.

About time and I would hope Tiger and Virgin do the same - I feel sorry for the people who do the right thing, pay the checked fee and others get away with bring on well above thier limits.

If it changes people's behaviour and leads to less breaking of the rules in the long run, it is well worth it.

Maybe QF can double dip and use them as Priority Boarding officers too?

Re: "CABIN BAGGAGE OFFICERS" on the prowl

well I wonder if QF will be the next cracking down on this?

Re: "CABIN BAGGAGE OFFICERS" on the prowl

I don't think anyone currently "sneaks" oversized bags on board. By definition, if the thing is oversized, it's not going to fit under that singlet or within the folds of a sarong!

I was only thinking Wednesday night, on a full MEL-SYD 737, how much angst there is currently finding overhead space, it's only going to get more interesting on QF when they squeeze in that extra row of seats!

Further delays whilst bags are taken out of the cabin and tagged into the hold - unless this is a foretaste of things to come on QF, too.

Personally, I think that the number of pieces should be more strictly policed as well as the size.

Having said all that, my cabin bag fits precisely into the old style (non-retracting) bins, wheels first. I know for a fact that it is outside of the dimensions of the metal gauge. So, the first time I come across this is going to be interesting!

Regards,

BD

Clearly it's a revenue exercise.

If airlines were serious about size of cabin bags there would be a simple $20 metal cut-out on the xray machine where if your bag doesn't fit through on the convener belt - you're sent back to the airline to check it in.

Some Australian international terminals are already doing something similar - all bags (including wheelie bags) must go into a plastic container/crate to go through the x-ray detectors; oversized bags will simply not fit into the crate, so aren't allowed through the x-ray, so don't get to travel in the cabin.
