Australia's Jetstar on track to overtake Qantas as larger international carrier | CAPA - Centre for Aviation

Interesting analysis!

Jetstar Airways is on the cusp of overtaking parent Qantas as the bigger airline by international passenger numbers as the LCC subsidiary continues its relentless growth in both the Australian domestic and international markets.

The latest figures issued by Qantas Group for Nov-2012 show the stark contrast in the fortunes of the two stable brands. Jetstar grew both its domestic demand and capacity in Nov-2012 compared to the same month a year ago, while Qantas mainline demand, excluding QantasLink, was flat on a modest increase in capacity.

Yes JQ Int is growing, helped by its cost base versus QF
but PER-DPS is it s biggest route !!

MEL-SIN doens't seem to have taken off too well (competitor to parent QF and SQ)
and still no SYD-SIN for example to compete against Scoot

And then we have Jetstar Asia (3K) that had dropped frequencies on SIN-AKL, and has some very weird thru flight MEL-SIN-China with 12hr layovers that almost noone would accept.

The whole of Jetstar only has 11 A330s flying, where will 15 787-8s go ???

Of course the A330s are a small part of the fleet, especially when you look at traffic through DRW and Asia.

3K has just started SIN-KIX non-stop with the A330s. Time will tell how successful this will be.

Apart from the routes that have replaced QF, are there any other ex-AU long-haul routes that have worked out well for JQ?

MEL BKK, SYD HNL are two examples where two in the box seems to work.

MEL-SIN route is still operating after, what two years, and from my experience it's fare offering is relatively high, compared to, for example what Scoot offer on SYD-SIN or Air Asia offer on MEL-KUL. Offering a perspective from Singapore, fares on JQ SIN-MEL are often in the same order of magnitude of SIN-MEL via SYD on QF 6 or BA (but usually well below the A380 services SIN-MEL and SIN-SYD-MEL). I have and would take JQ direct to MEL in preference to a 747 via SYD, even if costs were the same.

As for the MEL-SIN-PEK flight - with the 12 hour layover, the SIN-PEK sector is really targetted at the Chinese and Singaporean markets, not the Australian market, so it's not that weird if you look at it that way.

JQ seem to be carving out reasonable seat utilization across all destinations:
