Re: JQ to OP OOL-CNS

Its new. Just received the following JQ email. I imagine it's aiming as an "add on" at the Nagoya and Osaka markets who won't now be coming to Cairns directly.

Jetstar is very excited to announce a new service from Cairns to the Gold Coast, commencing 3 February 2009.To celebrate we are offering a fantastic fare for a limted time only! $59

On sale until 5.00pm (17.00 AEST) 17 October 2008, unless sold out prior.For travel between 3 February - 31 March 2009 and 28 April - 16 June 2009 (excluding 1 May and 5 June 2009).

This sale fare is a JetSaver Light fare for when you travel with carry on baggage only. You can choose a JetSaver fare for just $10 more and you'll get 20kg of checked baggage allowance.

The local Thunderer, the Cairns Post, this morning reports that that around 25,000 seats per annum, of which approximately 15,000 are expected to be filled by inbound Japanese tourists, will be "rescued" for the North Queensland market. 100,000 seats disappear from Cairns-Japan routes from December.

Apparently the new Gold Coast-Cairns route has been heavily subsidised by the Queensland Treasury. That fact, and Qantas recent history here, makes Geoff Dixon's comment, just stick a little in the throat

"Mr Dixon said the move reaffirmed Qantas’ commitment to Cairns, adding that it was one of the few airlines to introduce a new route at a time when the global airline industry and economy was in crisis."
