Jetstar has announced it is expanding its presence in South Australia and will establish a new cabin crew and pilot base in Adelaide to pave the way for additional services.

More than 120 new positions will be created, on top of 40 existing jobs, with Jetstar to base four A320 aircraft in Adelaide from 31 March 2014.

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO David Hall said the time was right to expand the airline’s presence in South Australia and provide extra services from Adelaide.

“This month, Jetstar will begin direct services from Adelaide to Auckland and non-stop flights from Adelaide to Bali,” Mr Hall said.

“Basing four aircraft at Adelaide will allow us to expand our schedule and add one extra daily flight between Melbourne and Adelaide and Sydney and Adelaide respectively.

“Our presence in Adelaide has more than doubled in the past four years and we believe the establishment of a dedicated crew base will provide a solid foundation to continue to grow low fares from the capital of South Australia.

Hmmmm, can't get Qantas flights from each city in Australia but seem to be able to do JQ just fine...

This will allow QF to reduce ADL flights in time.....

ADL-AKL/DPS in a JQ A320 LOL No thanks NEVER

Interesting, it still appears that JQ is going after VA... This has also brought the closure of the DRW base - which appeared to be a JQ strong hold...

Can people explain to me exactly what 'establishing a base' entails and what the additional jobs will be?

Maybe JQ is expanding capacity as a first step to adding J class to domestic flights. That would allow them to compete with VA operating costs.

hmmm..i'm fairly sure QF flies from each city in Australia

As Pushka alludes to QF are cutting back international flights from several Australian cities as we are continuously told here that QF can't make them work and we can't expect to have an airline fly us from wherever we are located unless we want to start our own airline up... Then JQ comes in and announces several international routes so i guess they can make it work... I guess the Perth and Adelaide people must just be cheap skates who wouldn't pay for a full QF??

I read in the article that JQ were cutting back at Darwin because of competition and capcity, another example of the QF group retreating in the face of a bit of competition???

Try flying ADL-JFK on QF. Last time I looked it was cheaper to go on EKs 777 to Dubai and then 380 to NYC.

Tell me about it. Currently I am looking at July flights. It is $4000 dearer to book through the Qantas website on Emirates planes to Europe, than it is to book those same flights on the Emirates website (in J for a couple of legs).

Personally not happy with this decision as it throws my plans for next year's SE Asia trip out slightly. the evening flights to SIN were handy for a flight after work, giving me a full day in Singapore afterwards. Hope the website pricing is a glitch, $1300+ for a return starter fare is ridiculous! Though most of my recent flying has been on Oneworld carriers SQ/MI us looking quite attractive after these changes.

Scott.

They've cancelled my JQ PER-CGK flight in April next year as well, now need to go via SIN...

I guess Garuda has gotten their act together with their Jakarta-Perth flight and so it was time to retreat, retreat, retreat...

..there was no mention of 'international' in the post i was responsding to..so QF actually does fly to each Australian city

UTR, your so right, congratulations...

Actually is Bunbury a city in Western Australia? And does QF fly there?? Don't think so, so you may not be quite as right as you think you are if we're being cough about it...
