Hey There.

My partner and I are going to BKK next month and I was wondering if any members have some advice.

This is my FIRST time going to Asia except for en-route to Europe transits, so I'm SUPER nowhere!!

Firstly we are taking our first ever "DeathStar" flight so is there anything we need to know??? I hear so many stories.

Secondly I was thinking of staying at the Sofitel Shilom. Does anyone have any experience at this hotel.

Finally..... I want to just RELAX!!! Any ideas of things to do places to see that will be safe and easy to get to from where we are staying.

I'd appreciate any comments.

If you like Thai food and the hussle and bussle of a city of 12+ million then you'll have a ball in Bangkok.

I tend to stay in more budget accomodation, so can't say what the sofitel is like. It is sort of down the "bottom" of silom so you're not an easy walk to the sky train or metro. Taxis are cheap tho.

I'm not sure if BKK is a place you can go to chillout. There's Wats (temples) all over the city, and to do it in an enjoyable way you will need 2 full days to see the sites.

I'd recommend doing a day trip to Ayuthaya with the return section via a cruise on the river.

There's plenty of Spas around the city, so you can certainly have some enjoyable me time.

For me the shopping in BKK is not as good as it used to be. Certainly not the bargain it was.

Hope ya have a great time. I'm heading over for a wet n cheerful songkran :D

BTW - if you like sushi / japanese food there's a place called Zen. They have 1 at siam centre and 1 just off Silom on soi Convent or Phipat. Very yummy and good value

Firstlly, JQi is pretty good so don't worry too much. (For long haul, I have flown SYD-HNL twice and SYD-HKT). If you have lounge access prior to the flight, then fill yourself up there, and then once on board - try to get comfortable fast, relax and before you know it, you'll be touching down into BKK.

Here is a thread that has quite a few suggestions of Bangkok:-

http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/your-questions/what-to-do-in-bangkok-19087.html

There are literally a zillion top quality hotels in Bangkok, so any of the 4.5 and 5 star hotels will be super. Any of the other side of the river would be less busy and somewhat more relaxing eg. Millenium Hilton. Also some of them have excellent skyline views. However if you want to be in the thick of things, the Le Meridien is my pick.

For things to do, you must visit one of the many roof top bars / restaurants that Bangkok has to offer; see this SMH article about it;

Guide to Bangkok bars | A toast to the high life

Most places you can go and enjoy a drink, but it's best to have a few drinks before hand, then hopefully you have a reservation for dinner at one their restaurants. I have had a friend's engagement dinner celebration at Sirocco and it was perfect.

For a bit more intimacy, Vertigo at Banyan Tree was flawless. We went a bit overboard spending more close to 10K BHT for dinner and lots of drinks for two, but the service was superb. As we were joking about how the table next to us were celebrating a birthday occasion, one of the hostess misheard us and assumed it was one of ours ...... so after the meals were served, the hostess brought out a HUGE cake with candles. We apologised and said it wasn't our birthdays but they told us, it was their mistake, and told us to go for it ;)

Apart from this, I love Thai food, enjoy the hustle and bustle of this megalopolis city, the hospitality is welcoming - and all of this this makes Bangkok one of my favourite cities in this world.

I try to make at least one trip a year to Bangkok - my favourite place in the world! It's not possible to have a bad time over there.

I've stayed twice at the Sofitel Silom. It's a decent high end hotel, nice rooms and facilities and its in a fairly good spot. Silom is a good night spot with a strong gay night scene, however still caters to all tastes. Sukhumvit would be an equally good spot, slightly more reserved.

I'm off in a few weeks (fortunatley in BA J), but JQ does the job. The flight feels like it stretches on a little longer though!

Im off to coughet with Deathstar early March, then returning BKK-MEL a week later. Managed to get seat 2D for both legs so reasonably happy so far.

There are lots of great 4/5 star hotels around BKK. I have split my 4 days in BKK between two hotels; The Intercontinental and The Millenium Hilton. I have status with both chains, however the most compelling reason for booking these two hotels was:

1. Asia Pacific
(50% off BAR)

2. InterContinental Hotels Group | Friends and Family
(~40% off BAR)

If you can time it so that your stay at the Hilton is over the weekend and the IC during the week you're laughing. I've booked a couple of suites (with Exec Lounge access) at both for fantasic prices (under $200).

Cheers

thnxs Gold, I have never seen the friends and family discounts, how do they compare to the online rates?

the lounge access makes all the difference IMHO.

I am a RA with IHG and used to stay in Millenuim hotels all the time for many years, good value.

cheers

I can't comment on the part of DeathStar, but I do hope you survive it long enough to enjoy your stay in Bangkok.

I have stayed at InterContinental, Dusit Thani, Shangri-la and Hyatt Regency (now known as The Four Seasons).

You can see my photos of Shangri-La Bangkok, it is a nice hotel with Skytrain station right by its front door (if you stay at Krunthep Wing) or back door if you are in the Main Wing. The hotel is excellent for relaxation the pool area is extremely nice. Enjoy the Sunset Bar in the evening with the river in front of you is just magical. The gym fronts onto the river, very relaxing just doing treadmill and watch the flowing river and boats.

Whist Dusit Thani (photos here) is right smack bang in the middle of actions of Silom. It is 4.5 Star but the room is just as good as Shangri-la, provided that you go for Club Room or Dusit Grand (Junior Suite) or better. For the price you pay for Shangri-la or InterContinental or The Four Seasons, you can get a Club Room or better and enjoy a host of Dusit Club benefits (read: All-You-Can-Drink Alcohol during coughtail hours + all-day-long soft drink/juice/coffee/tea in the Club.)

My last stay at Dusit Thani was October last year for 2 weeks in Dusit Grand room. It was my return stay, the service was spot on. No need to tell house keeping or any of the staff my preference twice. Easy walk to massage parlors for foot massages (250 Baht per hour cheap!!!). Skytrain Silom Station and Subway are right at the door. I do recommend this hotel.

Softel Silom, in my opinion is too far away from the Skytrain station, taxi on busy Silom Road is a hassle all times of the day or night... (well between 2am and 5am is OK.)

I am booked to go back to Dusit Thani again for another 2 week stay in a Grand Room (4800 baht per room per night with club benefits and breakfasts) in the March Easter school holiday. I recommend it.

Sofitel Silom is in a rather central location, near party areas of Silom sois 2 and 4 which are about a 10 minute walk away. The decor is rather nice and modern. Make sure you make it down for the buffet brekky (yeah yeah as if I can talk :D) - great range and they served a v nice ham steak when I was last there.

How would you know?

Here's my tip on flying JQ international. Fly in Y. Book the extra legroom seats, 44AB 44JK have more legroom than any starclass seat. Pack your own food, have a big feed at the airport or QC prior to leaving. Rent the portable entertainment units, use two Jetstar mags to give you more space on the table for the entertainment units. Buy drinks on board, even re-fill the one water bottle that they give you from the tap at the bulkhead.
Take your own NC headphones, I-pod , inflatable cushion and little blanket

I did this on Christmas day to Bali and have done this return to coughet. All woked well and on the coughet trip I got the flights return for $420 plus the units and seats was around $540 return.

I appreciate your replies.

The reason I was thinking of staying at Sofitel Silom was because I will get to A Club Platinum with 5 more nights before March. I can get 5 nights in a Prestige Club Suite for $1020AUD.

I saw there were other ACCOR properties in BKK but none looked as plush as the Silom.

Batesy... I purchased 2 x "Star Class" Tix in order to get the increased SC's.
I need 540 SC's before end of August to achieve QF Platinum. (First time!!) And my partner will reach QF Gold on the MEL - BKK sector.

Jeffrey... We both love Japanese food so we will DEFO check out Zen.

Are there any ideas about best seats in JQ Star Class. We are both 6'3" tall so need space. Also I hate flying so need to keep the drinks flowing. Does JQ serve Scotch??

All I can add is I think it's VERY important to stay at a hotel that is very close to the BTS skytrain.

The sticky hot weather means walking even more than a few 100 metres can be nasty sometimes, and the sudden downpours also don't help. Yes taxis are cheap but the traffic in Bangkok most days negates this and can waste valuable holiday time.

The skytrain is very tourist friendly and cheap, and gets you to most important places in Bangkok in icy cold aircon comfort. Even easier if you get a prepaid skypass from any BTS station and top it up with 500 baht then you don't need to worry about change everytime you need a ticket.

Yep, JW & Coke cans.

+1 to that. You can buy a preloaded BTS ticket (with B100 value) and load as you go.

Feb should be alright for Bkk, it is a "dry season" and "spring" (hmm... a stretch to the imagination...), but you should be able to stay relatively cool. Don't bother with the taxis, you will find yourself stuck in traffic instead. BTS or MRT are really the way to go in BKK. Further, if you need to travel short distances, you can use motorbike taxis they start with B20.

Further, don't bother exchange any Baht in Australia. Just take your AUD there, the money changers (lots of them around Silom area) are very competitive (shop around for better rates). Last October, I got AUD1:THB30.80.

As for Japanese food, also try Fuji. There's one near you in the basement of Central Silom complex. Or better still, go to Siam Paragon and pig out... I loved the Japanese Food Festival there.

You should hit "Chinese New Year" if you go next month. Enjoy the bargains!!! I am really envious!

Note: you might want to get local SIM cards (B99 for prepaid Happy SIM with B30 credit that's GRPS Internet enabled, unless you make massive amount call and download GBs worth data, B30 credit can last you the whole trip.) Get the SIM from 7-Eleven or one of many phone stalls you see.

Best seats are 1EF, 1AB and 1JK in that order. (1JK is last because it is close to the part of the galley where crew tend to sit and chat and that can be a bit annoying).

With all seats in row 1 you can place your cabin bag on the ground after take-off and rest your legs completely horizisontally. (If you lie right back you'll need to bend uyour knees but then can get fairly comfortable and 'flat' for a snooze). (Of course this advice works if you have something like a roller-bag of max cabin baggage size - if it is smaller then you legs will be on a bit on an angle.)

A tip for relaxing in Bangkok is the Healthlands Spa - it is about a 10 minute walk from the Sofitel. This is absolutely above board massage and beautiful premesis with clean rooms (it goes over 8 storeys - so gives you and idea how popular the place is).

A two hour thai massage (male or female masseur depending on how strong you want it) will set you back 450 baht. More expensive than one of the little shops on the street - but at Healthlands you get a great massage.

Oil massages (swedish) are 750 I think and the herbal compress (1 hour or thai massage followed by one hour hot compress being applied over your body) is also 750.

I go every day or every second day pretty much when I'm there. After a week you are very relaxed, all the knots have gone and life is fine.

I tip about 100-150.

They have private rooms, or rooms with 3 mattresses in them (for the thai massage) - so you can go with your partner if you want.

You're welcome to PM me if you want the name and number of the masseur I always use (they;ve been there for three years now - very good - as strong pressure as you want and will focus on your shoulders or back etc if they're bad - and they always seem to 'find' the knots).

Final tip - for travel airport to city - take a taxi out the front - there is an official booth when you exit and turn left. They give you a receipt and note your taxi number. Don't accept the '500 baht no meter' request by your driver. (being from the official rank they won't argue and will turn on the meter straight away). Have 100 baht note for tolls (they come to 70 in total). The fare to the Sofitel should be around 225-300 baht depending on traffic, plus tolls (70) plus 50 airport fee. I round up for the tip.

Alternatively if you want to splure you can take an AOT 'limo' - book it in the arrivals hall while waiting for your luggage. Their fare is around 1000 baht (maybe 1100??) but that includes tolls and the car is waiting for you as soon as you come out. It's usually something like a new Camry.

If you want a sim card - that's in the arrivals hall just outside of customs (but before exiting the airport for the taxi). For 200 baht you get free sim plus 200 credit. Takes all of 3 mins and they set it up for you.

Actually - final 'luxury' tip - if you want to save all the mucking around on landing you can book an arrival meet and greet service. They pick you up in a golf cart, whisk you though immigration and collect your bags off the belt and deliver them through to the taxi/limo for you. Cost is 1000 baht for pax 1 and I think 600 for the additional passenger. Certainly the way to go if you want a bit of fun. Again - PM and I'll give you the details.

I agree on visiting Ayuthaya and getting the cruise back to Bangkok.

There are also other really nice places to see/visit in Bangkok and just to name a few

  • The floating market
  • The flower market (evenings only, I have never seen so many beautiful roses and they also sell all the flowers used to make the galrands for Buddha)
  • Chatuchak markets is worth a visit on weekends (not far from Mo Chit BTS station)
  • Sukhumvit Road where you will find a lot of expats (also has some really nice English style pubs with live music Thu-Sun)
  • MBK (Mah Book Krong) shopping centre (from memory 7 floors and one can just about find anything)
  • Some of the classier stores on Wireless Road may be worth a visit

Well we are here in Bangkok.

I want to thank EVERYONE who replied to this thread.

For wha it's worth... Deathstar was awesome.... I was TOTALLY surprised. Cabin crew were great... Younger and more enthusiastic than QF. My glass was NEVER empty and although the seats were not as comfortable as QF... To me... the service more than made up for it.

Special thanks to Mel_Traveller for your insight. We BOTH really appreciate all your advice. Arrival service was excellent!!

Also JohnK. We appreciate your suggestions and will be trying several of them out tomorrow.

QF009..... AWESOME breakfast!!! We are in the Imperial suite so can eat anywhere in the hotel. Great buffet!!
