Holy smokes! When was that? Was it an actual, not test landing ("ar, yep, that one was too hard")? Caught in a wind shear?

It was in May 1980 during the MD-80 flight test program:
http://www.airdisaster.com/reports/ntsb/AAR82-02.pdf

About 0634 P.d.t, May 2, 1980, a McDonnell-Douglas, Inc., DC-9-80, N980DC, crashed while trying to land on runway 22 at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
The aircraft was on a certification test flight to determine the horizontal distance
required to land and bring the aircraft to a full stop as required. by 14 CFR 25.125 when the
accident oocurred.
rate at touchdown exceeded the aircraft's structural limitations; the empennage separated
The aircraft touched down about 2,298 feet beyond the runway threshold. The descent
from the aircraft and fell to the runway. The aircraft came to rest about 5,634 feet beyond
the landing thresh6ld of runway 22 and was damaged substantially. Seven crewmembers were
on board; one crewmember, a flight test engineer, broke his left ankle when the aircraft
touched down.

I'm reading it as ... for YH-VKD .... (not saying its right)

Jan 10 depart KPAE 1.01 pm PST to MEL 12.15 am EST +2 - Delivery flight (FlightAware tracking)

Jan 14 depart Mel to CNS as JQ7993 ..... to under go certification .......according to Jetstar source web page. (and again as per FlightAware)

Does not appeared to have moved from CNS since .......... That right / wrong ....... thoughts

Maybe... But also if you look at VH-VKB - it spent 2 weeks in CNS. Probably cerification flights don't show.

The pprune thread also suggests that the two weeks was due to CASA not being available to certify over Xmas

Has anyone queried SP over twitter?

He did post a follow up tweet saying he is still trying to confirm rumour. That was 2 days ago, since then nothing. Hmm!

At what point would CASA make a statement if they had to start an investigation?

Doesn't say much for his credibility does it? Pretty obvious his agenda.

Ignoring the source, it sounds like utter b/s to me. If the damage were as described, it would still be on the runway, in a number of pieces.

Steve 'foot in mouth' purvinas seems to have done it again.
Could he organise a chook raffle at his local pub?

I wonder whatever happened to this strange story. If any part of the original "rumour" is true, even if wildly exaggerated, perhaps a hard landing, then there have been no official reports. If none of the original "rumour" is true then it points to a serious level of mischievous behaviour on someones part.

He is also now harping on about a 747 returned from maintenance in Hong Kong that had all four engines wrongly screwed on.

Well, unfortunately that seems to be in factual. A 747 was returned with three engines screwed on using one washer (instead of two, but Casa basically cleared it and Qantas are saying that they were allowed to use one washer if it was the right thickness.

I was in DPS yesterday and spotted VH-VKB parked at gate 8 grounded by a technical issue... Nice place for her to take a holiday!

There's a bit of racism in the attacks on offshoring - SIN and HKG engineering would be every bit as good as Australia - you don't see CX and SQ planes falling out of the sky.

I totally agree - SP plays on the xenophobic and patriotic tendencies of the general public in order to gain support for his plight.

I am intrigued as to why he has never been taken to task over his comments and why he seems to be tolerated publicly?

Maybe someone is playing good cop bad cop, or perhaps its a case of better the enemy you know.... I think we can say this myth is busted, although the lack of use of the aircraft given their reported 20% saving in fuel VS an A330 is puzzling.

This is off topic with respect to Jetstar hard landings, but comes from the Steve Purvinas x-file and doesn't quite deserve its own thread. In tonight's Twitter entertainment, Mr Purvinas leverages a tweet by Bob Katter to argue that all aircraft should be maintained by Australians because Boeing maintenance manuals are only provided in English, and only Australians understand English well enough to read the manuals.
