So SYD-HNL is usually JQ 3 and HNL-SYD is JQ 4.

Just discovered that in addition to JQ 3 & JQ 4, there's now JQ 5 & JQ 6.

They are better times: more chance of early check-in at your hotel and, if you are on e.g Maui, more chance of getting a flight to HNL the morning of your return rather than having to fly to HNL the night before.

Those flight times almost mirror HA's times. I've flown both in the past year and must say the HA times were alot better than JQ's

Possibilities are increased demand? Response to Hawaiian Airlines new product? Possible capacity dumping or predatory pricing? How are the airfares looking on QF, JQ and HA?

Whatever the case - good news for people going to HNL.

Just got back from Waikiki on QF 3 / QF 4 last week, beautiful location; BUT both flights were Boeing 767's but they were so old not one had a entertainment unit in the back of the seat. On the way over the older plane had a projector unit to show the movies, I thought these planes had all but been decommissioned, but no Qantas keeps using its customers as fools while Jetstar gets the better planes. Go figure. BTW both flights full and I was offered upgrade by email on the flight out of Sydney but to my astonishment, 5 hours before the flight departure time, and again at the airport; I was told flight fully booked!!!! Why did I get the email offer?

Someone else was quicker to snap up the upgrades than you.

Seems to be a common trend of 1 and 2 poster members coming in and being highly dissatisfied with the QF and even the JQ products. Must be a lot of infrequent travelers going to/from HNL lately, due to high AUD and self destruction of Air Australia/Strategic.

Even though they are 1 and 2 poster newbies it quite surprising how common the complaints are, and some of them are real legitimate complaints as well. And before anyone accuses me of bias I have also seen some annoying things about the Hawaiian Airlines hard and soft product as well, so they haven't got it completely right yet either.....as one poster mentioned - "the best of a very bad bunch"

The common theme seems to be overpriced and uncompetative product.

Would be quite interesting for the mods to merge all the dispirate threads about unsatisfied QF/JQ flights to HNL and see exactly how much of an issue this really is.

Must say I have travelled SYD - HNL twice in the last 12 months, once on HA and once on JQ. Both flights were what I paid for. remenber JQ is a low cost carrier and HA is only one step above. Due to the USD being so good over the past year a huge number of Aussies are travelling to this destination as either a holiday destination or a start point for the mainland. This is also evidenced by HA moving to daily flights and moving to A330's and by JQ putting on extra services.
On both my trips I couldnt really complain with the service, entertainment. With JQ fares around $670 Y and around $1600 J class at the moment it certainly is a great way to get to a fabulous holiday destination. I dont think it is a case of being overpriced but perhaps some more competion, especially from a higher class operator on a direct route would make things interesting

Maybe VA to HNL and then you can connect to a number of cities with Delta to the mainland direct from HNL to SFA, SEA, LAX or SLC to name a few.

I didn't feel like a fool when I flew on QF4 last month on a JASA & had the choice of the in seat IFE with the entertainment or an individual Panasonic DVD player which each J pax was offered along with their own set of DVDs to choose from. You could have enjoyed the same if you'd taken advantage of the upgrade offer in the first instance when you were emailed or rung 5 hours before the flight departure.

Why the hell are you complaining that the flight was full when you got to the airport??? You obviously weren't going to upgrade anyway as you would have done so the minute you were advised the option was there. Sounds like you just want to have a whinge.

I love the 767 & was more comfortable sitting in one of the Dreamtime seats than the JQ A330 alternative. Incidentally their A330's are not brand spanking new as you suggest.

Sorry to argue, but I flew JQ4 HNL - SYD during march this year on board VH EBS which was delivered new 11/2011

The A330 I flew on as JQ35 definitely wasn't. VH-EBB rolled off the production line in TLS 27 Aug 2002.

The B767 that operated by QF4 flight was operated by VH-OGT which rolled off the production line at Everett on 21 Jun 1998.

I would still opt for a older Boeing over a younger Airbus given the choice.

Agree with most of your comments ozbeachbabe - as a JASA your flight to HNL on a 767 is pretty good value, but some have argued very poor value if paying $$$, and the JQ Starclass (I refuse to call it business class) product on the A330 isn't really that good value either, its the second or third best of a very limited bad bunch of products.

From memory the fleet age average is 7 years for JQs A330s, its variable like their service.

Some of the 330's are within that 5 year age group, with some being within 1-2 years old.

Out of interest, I am aware of the age of certain 767's, however has any done an average age of the Dreamtime 767's? I would suggest that it would probably not be as near to 20 as what some people tend to suggest. How hindsight would have been wonderful...

Would never pay for a J ticket on QF3/4 as ridiculously expensive so would only do a JASA for 60000 to 72000 points plus cash of AUD500.00 approx.

From what I can tell - EBA-F/K were delivered in 2000/1, EBJ delivered to QF in 08, whilst Q-S were delivered last year.

Some of the dreamtime 767's are only 2-3 years older than the oldest JQ birds.

OGR/S/T&U are 14 years on average.

The youngest B767 in QF's fleet is VH-OGV rolled off the production line at Everett on 23 April 2000 so is 12 years old.

OGV only flies domestically though. I think OGT/U are the youngest international ones that came in 1998.
