Hi All

Im looking at booking JQ30 MEL-SYD;
Have a few questions for those in the Know:

I need to be in Sydney CBD by 2pm; The scheduled arrival is 1315.
How quick would it take to exit the customs/immigration with the orange card for domestic passengers? I wont have any luggage.
And how reliable is this flights punctuality, given it comes from an INT JQ leg?

Cheers

David

If you have to be in the CBD by 1400 I wouldn't be taking it. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes or so to get out on arrival but wouldnt take much to be delayed to arrive late into the city. Take a domestic flight where there are a lot more options should problems occur

Dave

Thanks Dave.
The temptaion of the QF F Lounge at MEL intl (with WP) is also swaying me towards the JQ flight.... Plus its cheaper on JQ.
But like you said, a small delay throws plans from 2pm to the bin.
O/T if a flight in this case is delayed/cancelled, and the arrival time too late for what I had planned that day, can I leave the INT area at MEL without taking the planned flight given I was only flying DOM? How does this work? Or are you stuck in "Quarantine" until SYD arrival?
Thanks.

I was on JQ30 today - the flight was 35 minutes late arriving into Sydney. The delay was due to delay in connecting flights. The bags took approximately 20 mins to arrive and we left the airport at 2.30pm. I wouldn't reccomend JQ30 if you have a meeting in the Sydney CBD at 2pm.

Thanks Dave.

Assuming that the purpose of the trip is to get to an appointment at 14:00, take that which will give you the best chance of meeting the appointment , otherwise it can end up being an expensive visit to a lounge for no benefit

Taking a 11:00 domestic flight would give you plenty of leeway for problems and there are a lot more options from domestic if things go wrong.

JQ may be cheaper, but it wouldnt take much for you to be late and so just be a waste of cash

Dave

I tend to agree with Dave. I took JQ35 the other day and it was delayed outbound by around 90 minutes. I got into the CBD after 3:30pm with the ensuing large queue at SYD immigration.

Take a DOM flight and enjoy a F Lounge visit another time (just book a random date and enjoy the trip, but before March next year when I believe this is ceasing).

I've taken this flight a few times now, and I think it's only been on time once. Recommend avoiding it if you have plans in the CBD at 2 pm.

Will Qantas be changing the First Lounge access rules again for WP members in March?
I just finished booking these flights JQ SYD-MEL for April.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Can save a JQ int MELSYD for some other time.
QF 4?? it is.
David.

No - the JQi schedule changes at the end of March, and the JQ30 flight on Fridays is being eliminated. :(

I have to admit, I just learnt something. I wasn't aware that you could do a DOM flight using JQ via the INT terminals. Despite being QF platinum I have only enjoyed the F lounge once. What would be the best way to find out which flights have this set up? I do the MEL - SYD run a lot.

JQ Website, it is the only (AFAIK) domestic JQ service that offers S* between SYD and MEL (Tullamarine)

Have a look at this thread.

A QF Platinum who has only been to the F lounge once; and I as bronze 3 times, thanks to those Plats.

The Saturday afternoon flight JQ35 which departs each Saturday at 3:15pm is a favourite of mine.

Many thanks for that. So just to show my inexperience, if I took a DOM sector from the INT terminal, say MEL - SYD, do i need to carry a passport? And duty free??

Thanks again

This is an excellent post on access to F lounges flying domestic flights. It may be a little out of date.

That probably is out of date. For one, from end-ish of March this year, the JQ30 domestic sector will cease to exist.

According to QF's online timetables, QF81 SYD-ADL and MEL-ADL are also disappearing after the end of March (QF81 will then be only ADL-SIN without any previous domestic sector).

I'll seek to publish a new timetable after doing a bit of research on JQ's and QF's booking engines and online timetables.

AFAIK QF19/20 and JQ29/35 would seem to be all thats left post April.
