Jobs that involve travel to Iraq and Yemen?

I considered 12 months in Afghanistan a few years ago. The money was good as it was in $US when ours was ****e. I just didn't have enough experience for them at the time so missed out.

You just have to weigh up the pros and cons.

They are a little unnerving but the company wouldn't send people there if they didn't think they could be made safe.

I wouldnt be relying on the assurances of an employer about safety in a situation such as this. As an example O&G employees are targets in Nigeria regularly, however operations still continue.

i would try and talk to expats living/working in those regions first before making a decision.

As a mate of mine is currently in Nigeria for an O&G company - I had to chuckle a little bit at that ;) Let's see if he's back next week as planned..

Jokes aside, I think it is all a matter of perspective. There are parts of Melbourne & Sydney which I do not feel comfortable in, yet I still happily walk the streets. (There are certian places and times of day which I avoid).

In the context of travelling to Yemen or Iraq for work, I make the assumption that you would be working and that your employer would look after you. As Flashware intelligently reports, most organisations (public and private) operating in "danger zones" really do their best to look after their staff, especially expats. Naturally they have business imperatives, but if the organisation is worth working for then they will have some controls in place. They regularly monitor the situation and so should any traveller (e.g. you).

I suggest that you apprise yourself with the current situation prior to, and during, each trip to make sure that you are comfortable with the risk. At times I have asked a lot of questions, but I was always satisified. As such, I have felt comfortable with every place I have been sent for work.

I personally wouldn't have an issue with either Yemen or Iraq given the current climate.

Of course I expect that YMMV.

I wouldn't give a stuff about whatever some website says about the "situation". I'd look at who you'd be working for. That'll tell you the likelihood of being targeted by those looking to make a statement or a profit. Assume the worst if it's a US or oil company. Either way, I'd be asking lots of questions about security arrangements, insurance and to what extent do they rely on DFAT for assistance (ie first or last resort).

WRT Iraq, there is a line of control that separates Kurdistan in the north with Iraq in the south. Your chances of trouble depend on whether you're north of it or not.
