Bit of a bargain. Sample dates Mar 6 - Mar 29. JL PEY MEL-TYO-HEL (all 787 with their deluxe PEY).

Connecting flight is AY Y.

Connecting times just 1-2 hours in TYO and HEL.

This is actually a year round fare available at any time. Availability can be tight close in though.

I should have said - those dates were for MEL-CDG. After March the fare seems to dry up for April onwards? At least via google.

April is quite full as it is, but it's definitely available year round and does not always show up on Google.

Can you confirm any availability for aug/SEP? I presumed it had dried up due to no PE on tyo-mel.
Thanks

To what destination? Even full W class is only $3500 or so, so their most expensive W is cheaper than the lead in price for most other carriers.

I think soy is saying they thought PEY was being withdrawn MEL-TYO therefore no fares to europe (as they are via TYO)

You can still go via SYD (most fares) or SIN (on some of the fares).

That's great to know, yes as above I thought W was withdrawn Mel-tyo and appeared to be from SYD also as nothing was showing.
Looking for mel-cdg approx 13th august, returning vie-mel around 8th September.

Awful timings since you can't use the MEL-NRT and NRT-MEL due to no W cabin... but there's definitely availability:

An overnight is required in SYD due to how early JL leaves. A stopover is required in Tokyo due to married segments in both directions.

Thanks for this - I've been using the BA Y+ fare which lets you use partners AU-Asia (and BA codeshares on JL metal between HND and LHR). This comes in at ~$3300. This will save me some serious money. Thanks.

Wow thanks so much! Is there much via SIN instead of SYD, even though that sector would be Y? It looks that if so the outbound timings would improve significantly.

The last day for premium economy on JAL from MEL-NRT is 6 May (EDIT not 3 May as I had stated but the loads are very full already). After that date, MEL-NRT will be flown by a 788 in E12 config (see: Boeing787-8 (788) / Aircrafts and seats).

A few observations.

First the NRT-HEL leg can be on JAL metal (I'm flying MEL-NRT-HEL-BUD on 3 May, and only HEL-BUD will be on AY).

Second, the high quality of JAL's Y product means that the upgrade to W is actually pretty small. There's a bit more space (although Y on JAL's 787 is spacious for what it is), a leg rest and champagne, shochu or mineral water on the drinks menu, (EDIT and you can order Udon de Sky as a snack) but that's it. There's lounge access too, but the timings are so good that you might only get 30 or 40 minutes.

Third, some booking agencies will do a mixed fare, with W over on or before 3 May and Y back. My trip over will be in W, while the return leg CDG-HEL-NRT-MEL will be in Y. It came to $2.1k...

It seems they've revised the W fares to not allow it. It's still allowed in Y and J though interestingly.

Thanks, that's a bummer. Is it possible to book mel-tyo-hel-cdg/vie in the W class where available and the rest in Y?

Absolutely as long as you mean the entire return would be in Y. To be honest, the return portion isn't a huge issue coming back via SYD. It's the timings of the outbound that are a problem,

That price is getting very close to business class on other carriers. Or the other one that might be of interest, for around the same price, is QF/SQ/LH to Europe one way economy and return full business all the way (for $3500). For some going over economy is ok.

Mel_traveller - you have piqued my interest. Is that a LH fare with choice of more or less any airline to Asia?

I've been using the ba fare because availability is generally good and I'm Time poor (last time I went to the UK I spent 2 days on the ground There) and the connection times were good and there were options in the event of a problem. If like to do CI or VN J class but the connections tend to not work with my schedule. I know that some of the European Airlines offer mixed class fares (y to Asia J to Europe and same on the way back) but I've never managed to get them to price sensibly.

The fare seems to be a combination of either QF or SQ on the outbound, connecting in Singapore to Lufthansa.

The return is either via BKK or SIN, flying TG or QF respectively. Via BKK is probably better for the longer 9 hour segment to get proper sleep to get over the jet lag.

But... while this is mixed class it is full economy one way, only the return is in business (all the way through to australia). I put a thread in the ‘cheap international airfares forum’ here on AFF explaining how to book.

If you have status with Qantas probably a nice way to fly if you have to fly economy, because you’ll get all the ground benefits.

Connections are just a couple of hours in BKK/SIN each way.
