We're going to Iceland in a few months (on the way to Greenland) and are torn between making the most of our time in Iceland or grabbing a day in NYC before we go there.

We're flying in to JFK on QF11, due to arrive at 1715 (coming off QF15 from BNE). I believe that the flight arrives into terminal 7. There is an Icelandair flight out at 2040, again, leaving out of terminal 7. If it makes any difference, this is a Sunday evening.

Is that doable? Have we already passed through immigration at LAX so won't need to do that inbound at JFK or do we go through that again? We realise that we'll have to arrive into NY, get our bags, then check in for the Icelandair flight and go out through immigration again.

If not, we'll catch the AirTrain and LIRR to Penn, stay in NYC overnight, then get the 2040 flight Monday night.

Thanks in advance

Pete

Both QF15 to LAX and QF11 on to JFK use the same aircraft. You'll get off the plane, collect bags, CBP, drop bags, TSA, back to gate.

The US does not have exit immigration beyond random gate checks. The airline sends the required data to CBP. A 3 hour connection through JFK T7 is doable, provided you don't hit any large ATC/weather delays.

If you do that, I'd stay at one of the hotels near Jamaica station, not all the way in Manhattan. Much cheaper, most have free transport to/from JFK and only 20-30 mins LLRR ride away from Manhattan.
