JetStar Pilots' Strike

Perhaps Alan Joyce could redistribute some of his bonus? But maybe that would be regarded as a company profit share scheme😎

Sam Armytage better book early for Christmas with another airline so she doesn't get "ripped off" with another $700 last minute fare,

Tiger Pilots earn 17% more than Jetstar Pilots. When you are talking wages in the 200s, well that’s a big difference. Tiger is offering comparable wages to its parent now. Jetstar are not offering comparable wages to its parent. The difference between TT and VA is a couple %. JQ are about 30% behind QF pay.

Then you have the issue of Jetstar drivers flying 230 seat machines vs Tiger 180.

So you can see why they are chasing a 15-20% increase.

The issue the global pilot market has adopted in some operators is LCC = Low cost Pilot. Very wrong indeed.

It seems that now Jetstar ground crew and baggage handlers have also voted to strike over Christmas.

Passengers booked on a flight with budget airline Jetstar could have their holiday plans disrupted, with ground crew, baggage handlers and pilots expected to strike in the weeks leading up to Christmas and beyond.

Key points:
  • Jetstar ground crew, baggage handlers and pilots have voted to do a series of strikes in the lead up to Christmas and beyond
  • The Transport Workers Union says workers are struggling on low pay, but the company says its offer of a 3 per cent annual wage increase is reasonable
  • The pilots union, the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP), also wants better pay and conditions
The Transport Workers Union (TWU) said on Friday that about 250 Jetstar workers in Sydney, Melbourne, Avalon, Brisbane, Cairns and Adelaide had voted in favour of taking protected industrial action, which could include work stoppages of up to 24 hours.

In addition, 650 Jetstar pilots — part of the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) — have also voted to strike.

The decision to strike was taken after the airline rejected demands for better employment conditions relating to pay and working hours.

The TWU said the union must give the company three working-days' notice before taking industrial action, so the earliest a strike could take place would be on Thursday.

But there could be a number of short strikes in the lead up to Christmas and beyond, it added.

Good on them for trying, but I think it will likely only hurt themselves this time around. Wages flat everywhere and if you accepted a job with a business that pays lower then you won’t catch up by striking. (And losing the lower wage as well while not at work)

Anyone have any updates or inside info on this?
I won't be flying Jetstar over Christmas (or ever) but I will be flying in a way which would make me vulnerable to any disruption to Jetstar.
Need to position myself in SYD for a flight to SCL on the 24th.
So tossing up whether to use my Velocity points to book with VA on the 23rd.

The dates were given for the Pilot strike, its next weekend in the morning only.

I’d imagine the next one will be 4/5th Jan. Like the Tiger action, the union went hard across the Oz day weekend also.

Seems to be mornings the union targets for stop work.

The other issue is when they opt not to fly aircraft with defects, overtime, standby, sickies etc...that’s the pain point for the last minute cancellations.

Might be an idea to avoid JQ back half of this month and in month of Jan.

Yes, although how often Jetstar faces disruption will probably never affect me. 😀

Where were the dates given for the pilots' strike?
I won't be flying Jetstar but I could suffer if a lot of PAX were pushed from JQ onto QF.

Many no doubt will need to wait it out and fly another day.
Well that won't be an option for me as I will be flying SYD-SCL on the 24th and then SCL-GRU the same day (across the dateline).
That's why I am trying to get a heads up.

We chose Jetstar via qantas for Brisbane Hobart direct (via qantas points) but our return leg on Sat Dec 14 is only an hour or so after the narrow body no fly period, apparently.

That probably means that the aircraft won’t get to Hobart from Brisbane and maybe we will shuffling back by another port with qantas, if they can find room for a family of 4.

Having looked into this I realise there is only one daily service PER-SYD so the impact on this route will be more limited than on others where there are more frequent J* services.
There are currently roughly twice as many free seats on QF services each day than there are J* PAX.
And I suppose no J* PAX are going to be rebooked into J!
So I think I can relax a bit.

I have read that the pilots' union has stated that "there will be no industrial action between December 20, 2019 and January 3, 2020".
So I am breathing a little easier.

Ground Crews going ahead with action this Friday. Going to be a very expensive three days for them.

According to the Transport Workers Union (TWU), over 250 workers will hold a two-hour work stoppage at Sydney, Melbourne, Avalon, Brisbane, Cairns and Adelaide airports.
The strikes will run as follows:
  • Sydney: 5.30am to 7.30am and 5.30pm to 7.30pm
  • Melbourne: 9.30am to 11.30am and 4pm to 6pm
  • Avalon: 8.30am to 10.30am and 6.30pm to 8.30pm
  • Brisbane: 6am to 8am and 6pm to 8pm
  • Cairns: 5.30am to 7.30am and 1.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Adelaide: 6am to 8am and 6pm to 8pm

How ironic that one of the reasons Jet* was established by QF was to lower costs utilising a non-unionised work force. And look what happened... After a few years, the Australian based pilots and ground staff organised themselves, via Union membership, to fight for better wages and conditions.

Unfortunatley, aeroplanes are aeroplanes. You might be able to sell muffins on one of them, but the required training for the highly skilled technical staff doesn't change.

So who is flying this Sat and which airline? The media I have seen seems to be around 10-15% of JQ flights might be affected with some additional or upgauged QF services planned to cover the industrial action.

Haven't seen any mentions of JQ pax being pro actively rebooked or retimed yet but I guess we will see on the weekend.
