Next week I'll be travelling from PVG to BKK on TG and then from BKK to MEL on JQ.

I'd prefer not to go thru immigration just to checkin at the JQ landside checkin counter (2 more unwanted stamps in passport).

Is there a way that I can checkin airside for the JQ flight?

I assume that you could check in at airside transit desk or at the gate used by JQ, subject of course to not having bags to check through (since JQ doesn't interline) and to beating the check-in cut off time.

I do not think so; the only information I can find is here: Transferring to/from other flights.

It contains the following sentances:
... Check-in is not available at the gate lounges. ...
... Unless otherwise advised, passengers must always check-in between flights. ... &
... Check-in for international flights is not available at the Qantas Club. ...

I have a similar situation returning from the Maldives next week.

Will I be hit with Thai departure tax as a result of having to pick up my checked in during an 8 hour stay?

I believe you will be hit with the BKK departure tax (what is it now, THB 700?).

On top of that, you will get to experience the joys of the new BKK airport (if it hasn't fallen down first).

Thaksin must be having a good laugh!
