Jetstar cuts carry-on baggage allowance [from 10kg to 7kg]

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

I believe that size, not weight is the problem. 10 kg is reasonable.

Given that we are going to have to live with these restrictions, one way around them is to wear a Scottevest - see www.scottevest.com - the Travel Vest or new RFID Travel Vest would be ideal.
I have the travel vest and it can carry an awesome amount of stuff. The personal area network to route your earbud headphones is excellent, particularly on public transport. I regularly have my iPad, water bottle, umbrella and several other things in the pockets. The vest has 23 pockets, almost all internal and zipped so pickpockets would have trouble getting in. Another advantage is your passport and documents are always at hand. The piece de resistance is the glasses pocket with lens cleaner on an elastic cord and pocket map printed on it!

I do also own their fleece jacket for cooler weather and the pants and shorts. The quality seems very good.

PS I don't get a commission from Scottevest but do like their products.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

I'm a little disappointed with the changes.
I'm always within the limits size wise but sometimes i am at 7-8kg due to a laptop that i carry.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

Another good reason to avoid Jetstar. A 7kg limit per bag would be reasonable, and enforcing that along with size and quantity limits should allow most travellers to carry on what they need to. As many have said here those who travel with 'the kitchen sink' should be made to reduce what they bring on board. I believe I travel very lightly, and use everything I take, but getting a 3-4 day business trip within a total of 7kg will be challenging. My wheeled carry on and messenger bag weigh a combined 3.2kg when empty. Looks like I might have to leave the running gear at home and just get fat. Or not fly Jetstar...

I can make 7kg if travelling with ipod mini and use a backpack. If I need to take a laptop, and/or use a wheelaboard, then it's more of a challenge.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

When I'm travelling for longer than 2 days, I take a small case and my laptop with me, always hits 10-11kg, looks like I won't be taking my laptop with me anymore (current planned trips are only 1 night so doesn't really affect me at the moment).

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

I doubt you can really do a trip with a wheeled bag now with the 7kg limit. The lightest wheelie carry on bag I have in my collection is 1.65kg (an el cheapo I picked up in a John Little sale in Sg). I did 10 days in HK and Sg last year, but I only needed shorts, t-shirts etc. and I managed to wash a few things along the way, so came home with a couple of unused items! I flew SQ and they did weigh my bag at checkin in Melbourne. It was 7.1kg. But I also had a very small shoulder bag with my tablet, kindle etc. So I guess my total weight would have been closer to 10kgs all up.

Don't do biz trips so can't really comment, but I would say that you would be restricted to just a couple of days, ie wear one suit and take clean shirts, etc. I guess some people could also manage with a tablet for a day or two to replace laptops. Some execs also have the advantage of expenses, so can use hotel laundry to maintain supply of clean clothes over a longer period.

Whilst most of us are now addicted to wheelie bags - especially me as I have back problems, I think we have to consider just using a lightweight hand carry bag, if we want to maximise our 7kgs. I have a lightweight nylon Puma Sports bag weighing about 200 grams with shoulder strap. I am planning to try and do a week long trip to Malaysia next month with it, though it may be a little small. It is smaller than the standard QF carry on dimensions of 56x36x23, so I need to find something a little bigger maybe. I was looking at a Black Wolf bag, but the weight is up to about 500grams then.

I have also cheated a bit as I have also been gradually buying lightweight clothes, when I see useful things on special. I specifically use only when travelling, so that has helped enormously in keeping the weight right down. That and taking old clothes which I discard along the way!

I have never worried about it especially when I check in bags.
I used to carry 30kg on some int flights (ex kitchen sink) never had an issue

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

Its not so much the 7kg luggage limit that annoys me on JQ. I try to avoid checking in luggage because the ridiculous length of time it takes to check it in. The queues are always long - the check-in in staff are slow and often appear to have a lazy approach to their job - stop for a gossip between pax - and you then have to wait while pax re pack their bags because they have discovered that they are over weight. Seriously, as a low cost airline why cant they have automated bag drop - or surely have scales readily available for pax to check the weight of their bags. This morning at Melbourne after standing in the queue for 40 minutes - just before I reached the luggage counter - the staff opened up another line - meaning I had to wait even longer. I only choose JQ because QF don't fly the times I need and QF have developed the most ridiculous routes to and from Cairns (ie who wants to fly 3 connections from Melbourne to Cairns on a red e deal at more than the cost of a business class seat).

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

It makes me so angry!!! I'm a 67kg male who like to travel just with a carry-on that is within size limits. With a laptop & camera.
Last time I sat next to a huge guy who took at least 1/3 of my personal space, and they will <!!!> harass me for having couple of kg more in my luggage???

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

interesting move given that typically if one books a JQ flight and pays for a checked bag then the ticket price is then pretty much the same as VA or QF (unless in one of the fleeting actual sales).

policing of this may drive people to do more comparison of the competition as well if they get stung - both of which could lead to lower revenues in the long term

Mrs Ansett and I have a booking for Cairns at Easter on Deathstar with HLO and will be carrying 10 kilo each and a copy of the confirmation of the ticket indicating the 10 kilo allowance. Lets hope they don't get silly :)

I just printed boarding passes for this Thursday on MEL-BNE booked months ago and all of the have CB10 (referring to 10kg allowance)

Good luck with that one.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

When I was doing the weekly commute it didn't take me long to work out it was better to OLCI rather than counter style... the J* agents at MCY like to weigh all bags at the checkout counter.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

They have had the scales out in Sydney!!!

Again confirm that flights booked prior to change have CB10 on the BP

Complained to CEO OZ/NZ about it, and he said they had very positive feedback on social media. He was on SYD-AVV tonight

I suggested they might look at this website..... Reply was we only look at Facebook!!!

They may introduce a small charge for CB10 going forward (I suggested all HVC should get CB10).....

From recollection, JQ had a staff member on here for a very short stint. I'm not sure why they didn't stay longer but I believe they moved positions and whoever would have taken their place wasn't interested.
