Thought I'd try a week In Nandi, seems to come up OK at $351 (not sure what I'll do there though, all suggestions will be gratefully rec'd).

depends what interests you.
If snorkelling, beaches etc. then get away from Denarau and head to the Islands.
The Yasawa Islands are my favourites and can highly recommend Blue Lagoon Beach Resort.

Denarau to me is full of Aussie and New Zealand families.

I agree Denarau is totally overrated. I would agree the Yasawa islands are stunning.

Have you thought of booking a tour? I did a great dolphin watch tour last time I was there. They came right up to the boat :)

Thanks guys, I did a quick look at Tripadvisor before pressing the pay button and saw that NAN did not hold any interest and did not want to complicate it, so chose DPS instead and will start research on that now. I hope others could find the really cheap

Hmm, cheapest HBA - xMEL - NRT I saw was 21 - 28 May (plus variuos), for $511

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I did a dummy booking and selected the $2 bundle, did notice it said points only available on the HBA-MEL leg not the MEL-NRT and the same return.
No mention of SC.

Already having 5 weeks away next year - HKG in April (Easter) at this stage, Fiji in July (3 weeks) and HKG again with kids in Oct for a week.
Have enough annual leave to go to Japan but saving it up for the year after.

AusTraveller was the Dolphin watching tour in the Yasawa Islands or was it the one over near Suva? Can not remember the name of it but have read about it and the Spinner Dolphins.

The tour we did originated in Suva. Included transfers and the boat ride out to the reef. Yes it was the spinner dolphins. We also got a nice swim and snorkel in the reef. They have other tours from the western side too (where the Yasawas/Nadi are). I think I still have the details if you need them. Let me know. It was definitely worth it and a highlight of the trip and seeing as you have 3 weeks you have more than ample time, between sipping coughtails of course ;)

Might have to check out these fares a little better myself....

Doesn't JQ only have one flight a day from SYD though? Must be hard to undercut FJ who would pay FJD wages.

I usually find booking through QF on QF code share, flights are as cheap as going JQ by the time you add baggage and / or plus packs.
FJ is cheaper but I like the "security" of dealing with Q if any issue, which from 6 flights has not happened yet... other than an 18 hour delay coming back but was very well looked after.
