Etihad is eager for India's second-largest airline, Jet Airways, to consider direct flights between the subcontinent and Australia once it gains a cornerstone stake in the carrier.
The speculation about Jet Airways flying here comes a month after flag carrier Air India began the only direct services from Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne.
The entry of a second Indian airline would pose the biggest challenge to Singapore Airlines, which has the lion's share of the market between Australia and India.
Etihad chief executive James Hogan has talked privately about his interest in Jet Airways launching direct services to Sydney or Melbourne, according to two well-placed sources.

The Middle Eastern airline is awaiting final approval from Indian authorities to complete the purchase of a 24 per cent stake in Jet Airways.
It is expected to have a large influence over Jet Airways' future direction despite its holdings falling well short of control.

Probably won't happen until 2015 when they start to receive their 10x 789s? (Unless they can somehow fill a 77W for the route).

I was talking to someone in the know last week at Jet who said that they were considering direct services to Aus, but now they were going to wait to see how AI fare.
He did also say that he thought the 788 is the wrong bird for the mission, and that AI would loose money on it, and that the 789 would be a more suitable type.

I guess AI would struggle to a degree because they don't have a partner airline here in Aus to feed traffic into the service. Obviously, they are covering SYD & MEL, but would surely benefit from feeder flights from other ports, which 9W would doubtless work out with VA.

A well timed BOM-MEL rotation (no curfew at either end) with feeding traffic at both ends could work, with the right aircraft type, there is obviously demand.

Given the Japanese and UA are all doing the 5500 miles or so between Japan and US west coast with a 788, I guess an extra 500 miles might also be acceptable for it? Although IMHO, at that distance, I would say that it really should be a 77W, with enough pax to fill it.

In Australia, are there any other major Indian communities apart from those in capital cities? Even for those in, say, BNE, I think there are a lot more choices flying through SIN instead of joining a non-stop flight in SYD. There are also more flights to different Indian destinations from SIN, and are covered reasonably well by LCCs as well, for those on a budget.

I also wonder if PER would work well as a transfer point, something such as MEL-PER-BOM. The PER-BOM leg is around 8-9 hours in flight time, and would be much more ideal for the 788.

QF is interlining with them...
