Just thought I'd post this, because people told me you can't get a local sim with voice services in Japan, but it turns out you can, so other people might find this useful. I'm in Tokyo and using it at the moment.

PAYG SIM | b-mobile

It's not exactly cheap, but the network seems fast, 3 gig of data is a fair amount, it arrived at my hotel the day before I did, and I then had to upload a photo of my passport photo page and a photo of my passport address page as part of the activation process - all explained in English both on the website and with the instructions they send you. Activated today, all working well. You can extend it after the initial 7 days but I've not done that yet.
 
Heading to Japan in April so will give it a try - thanks!
