JAL Upgrades

No. However, if you're taking dometsic JAL flights then you can upgrade for cash at the check in desk. Y-J is 1,000 Yen and Y to F is 8,000 Yen.

They also reissue the ticket so you get the upgraded SCs and points.

Oh and welcome to AFF.

Afraid that's another no.

Well there are reports of ways but they are highly complex and generally very expensive in terms of points lost to the transaction.

Until so many Australians reduce their obsession with earning Qantas (and only Qantas) FF points, this company will as the dominating entity for domestic flights be able to 'call the shots' and do what it wants to restrict supply of award seats, alter the number of points required (generally only upwards), reduce the real monetary value of points but most of all continue to give travellers the impression that Nirvana awaits.

If you want competition, fly with the opposition and join its FF program despite the shockingly poor website.

Note that very few airlines allow you to upgrade on other airlines.
Thus the general recommendation to earn points on the airline you fly the most with, given upgrades are generally a good use of points.

Within oneworld limited to BA and IB (owned by same parent) and AA (with who they have a cross-Atlantic JV).
A few more example in stat alliance, but not widespread.

What's JL dom J like?

I was getting what I needed before, so I could tolerate it...now I'm not.

But that hasn't been a benefit for how long now?

It's funny you mention jumping ship to VA. It's only been recently they have allowed FF upgrades on their own metal (and only for a select few). In the context of the OP, that post doesn't really make sense considering you have a greater flexibility in using points to upgrade on QF...
