I am trying to get from Asia to the US in Oct. I did my previous trip last month (May 2022) with Qatar in J. It was great but just took too long and it was expensive (US$7k). Looking at JAL Premium Economy and seems to be a good option as it is less than US$1.6k ex KUL. However as I looked a bit deeper into the details, it seems that the Japan-US West Coast leg could be in economy. Does anyone know if it is premium economy or economy seats selling as premium economy?

There’s a a lot of wide body aircraft in the JAL fleet that don’t have proper premium economy seating, all 788s and 772s. 788s get used for a lot of the west coast flights, so highly likely you’ll run into them, which is unfortunate.

On the plus side the sky wider economy seat is the most generous in the sky, only 8 across in econ where everyone else’s has 9 seats. I’d probably just pay for econ if biz wasn’t an option.

Couple of other things to try - fares out of CGK can be lower, often some good deals there. And check out JAL’s new LCC zipair, they have a biz seat that they selling for around US$1200 each way from BKK or SIN to LAX in LCC style everything is extra but not a bad price for flat beds all the way.

I’d keep an eye out for specials ex Asia… IIRC singapore airlines business class is around AUD3000 at the moment out of select ports… varies between bkk or kul. The current specials are exBKK.

Although OW carrier is preferred, A$3k is a good price. Unfortunately, the best I could find for late Sep departure cost closer to A$5k. I will just keep looking.

Singapore Airlines flights ex BKK to US have gone up significantly in price. All above A$5k. I could find some ex-Vietnam (SGN & HAN) for under A$4k though.
