Hi all,

My apologies if this is (a) in the incorrect spot and (b) already asked somewhere - I haven't been able to find it.

We are travelling to Japan next April and I am looking into the best flight options at present. We are flying out of Melb (which is a 4 hr drive for us) and we want to ideally travel overnight as we will have our 3+5yos wit2h us. Particularly on the way over day time doesn't work as it means we lose 2 days of our trip essentially (whereas with the midnight flight from Melb with JAL we can drive and fly out after work).

So we are looking at (the week after but flights aren't fully available yet so I am basing on these dates):
2 April - MEL to NKM (via NRT) 00:35-11:10 on JAL

15 April - Either:
NRT - SYD 19:20-6:10 on JAL (then domestic flight separate with Virgin points)
NRT - MEL 20:05-7:35 on Qantas

Obviously flying there with JAL and return with Qantas is the best option. Is there any way of booking these together? JAL seems to show the Qantas flight, but won't let me select the combined carriers (ie comes up with a carrier).

You would probably have to do it via a travel agent, either on-line or a shop front.

I don't think there is a *cost-effective* way to book JAL outbound and Qantas inbound without redeeming points. You'd probably have to pay for 2x one-way fares, which will be much more expensive.

However you can fly MEL-NRT and NRT-SYD-MEL on a single JAL booking, using QF from SYD to MEL.

I would try to book something like this with JAL:

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I note you were actually wanting to go to Nagoya for the destination.

The cheapest match which can be ticketed through JAL is $1141.77 rtn.

Someone recently booked a CX NRT-HKG-SYD with what seemed to be a very good price for a one way/open jaw.
This was discussed in last few days in these forums
