Hi,

Anyone had a recent experience of JAL J? I have the option of JAL or CX to NYC; JAL being 772 to/from NRT, then 787 outbound with Shell seat and 77W on return with SkySuite. CX option I'm well aware of, being 333 and 77W. I like both Japanese and CX-style food. I would normally just go CX but JAL's ~2k cheaper; it's not coming from my pocket but I do like a bit of a bargain...thanks.

a lot depends on the JL seat type. The angled beds on the 787 would not be everyone's first choice for a long flight. CX wins with their full flat beds. The skysuite is supposed to be good however.

Service wise, I'd say JL has the edge for food and service.

THanks. Yes I agree the angled bed and non-direct aisle access seems a setback; the only upside is the flight arrives in NYC evening so I'd probably only need 4-5 hours dozing on the way over.

Has anyone had luck with fly-ahead on CX? The earlier flight from HKG into NYC arrives at a better time but is a few grand dearer. If I arrive in HKG on time for it travelling HLO is there any chance they'd allow me to switch onto the earlier flight (assuming it hadn;t already closed of course)?

I like both airlines but feel JAL service is more sincere and caring.

CX is very clinical.

If it was my choice, I would go JAL to experience the 787.

Also remember, JAL will be quieter because all the Japanese paxs on board will be asleep for all flights - its amazing how they can sleep anywhere anytime

Interesting thread I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it. Have just booked my first 4 flights with JL, 2 of them being on the 787. Will be interesting to compare their J product to CX.

Is SPG the only way to transfer Aus-based cc points across to Mileage Bank? I've read very good things about JL F and wouldn't mind giving it a try. Trouble is it's a bit like CX; F is only available on flights which already have a very good J product. JAL requires 40k for the upgrade which work out at ~64 Amex MR points; CX requires 60k @ 1:1 for Amex.

agree jal has far better genuine caring service,
food... jl food is alot different to cx, jl western menu seems alot more asian, cx western menu actually seems western.
my only fault with jl is ife
on the 9 hour trip nrt - syd (and 4hr trip hkg - nrt) only had usa movies, no general television programs, so if you don't want to be stuck watching just movies don't go jl, but if thats not a deal breaker then me personally would go jl over cx

That's a good point and I had forgotten about that!

I agree the JAL ife can be a hit or miss, with some many different versions across their fleet but I always manage to find programs to pass the time.

I always make sure I have a good book in my hand luggage, on the rare occassions any airlines ife fails during the flight.

A quick update - both the JAL ex JFK and CX options increased by the time I got the budget approved so now booked on JAL but return ORD-NRT on AA codeshare. JAL pricing 6800 inc tax. CX went from 9100 to 9800 - I am hoping the 3 grand saving will help me to sleep on the slopey seats...will provide a TR afterwards as 6800 is a decent price, particularly if the 77W is an option.

you might score full flats on the AA bird?? Not sure how the refurb is progressing on those.
