Dear All
so having seen the light and joined krisflyer after years with QFF and being completely insulted by this direct sweep thing, I hve just booked my first redemption flight.
3 J seats LHR to MEL in May 09.SQ 747-400's for both legs. No i didn't have to book them 11 and a bit months in advance and it only cost me 191250 points plus taxes (thanks AMEX for thr bonuses!)
So I get to choosing the seats.I'm travelling with my daughter and wife. The center seats in row 25 appear to have a space either side of them in front of the closet. Suitable little person play area? Seat guru says they are cold because of the airvents.
Any info and/or links to pictures would be greatly appreciated
Cheers and a Happy New Year everyone

Firstly, I completely agree with your comments on Qantas. Ripoff in every respect (and these days also not too reliable). They were even going to sell their own grandmothers last year with their leveraged buyout plans, but thankfully a crashed market put paid to that.

On SQ, I have used the downstairs bulkhead seats (row 11) on the 747 several times, and have found them to offer reasonable space and privacy. These days, however, I travel on my own more often than not, and usually book the exit row 17 upstairs. Very nice, but not appropriate for kids, though.

Which crashed market? The one that happened 12 months after the equity collapsed due to lack of shareholder commitment or some other unknown crash that you are using to support your argument?

Since there are 3 of you including a little one I'd recommend one of the centre rows on the main deck. Unfortunately I've not experienced the main deck on an SQ 744 so i'm not in a position to advise on play areas for the little one.

The exit row on the upper deck would be an ideal play area but of course inappropriate for children. Row 17 has enough space to fit a car.

Seat guru says they are cold because of the airvents.

Unless you are exceptionally sensitive to cool air, or come from a tropical climate I would consider this a plus not a negative! I don't think I've ever experienced problems with cold air on an SQ flights, their cabins are kept well and truly calibrated to Singapore temperatures! (In fact if travelling o/n in J I usually ask for a lighter cotton blanket from Y because the woollen J blankets are too hot for me!).

That aside I concur with QF009 the three seats in the middle downstairs are probably best for your needs.

I find SQ too hot ! and i live in Singapore, cool would be a very welcome thing.. I cant think if i have sat in that seat before to confirm what i like though.

Singapore is too hot I agree, but to compensate for that - the air conditioning in most buildings/buses/trains is FREEZING!

Cheers lads
Thanks for the warning about SQ plane aircon being set high I will pack accordingly. We have the 3 center seats booked but does anyone have info on the space, if any, infront of tthe closets either side of row 25?

Hi, if my memory serves me correct, having once flown in these seats with my family, there is no space by the closets, it is merely the passageway to the toilets at the back of the J section, and thus a fairly busy area. There is no real area for a child to play, even in business class. That is probably true for all aircraft types on all airlines. My personal experience is to favor the foward bulkhead seats, as kids can play in fron of your seat without bothering, or being bothered by, pax in front of you. The trick for travelling with littlies is plenty of distractiions, a new toy given at the airport and if above 3 years old, a portable DVD player is great. SQ choice of TV for under 6s is virtually non-existant, quite good for older kids though.
