J Savers

I wonder if it is SIA's plan to phase out J savers completely as they slowly upgrade their fleet?

Hope not because they are my second tier FFP behind QF... Might have to look at the new burn rates on SQ with Velocity when it is relaunched..

Totally agree - J savers were plentiful years ago. For the last year, I have been unable to find trip to Europe for the next year except at a few days notice.

Hey deluxeflyer, would have PM'd you but looks like Im restricted until 15 post count. Oh well 12 to go :)

Any chance you could PM me with the details please? Looking for a SIN - MEL one way bus fare for my honeymoon. Thanks

The window of opportunity was very small.
The savers referred to in Post 1 are all gone now.

Depending on when your honeymoon is (Congratulations, BTW) you may be able to get J Savers on the retrofitted 73A (777-300) with the new regional J seat, or in the old spacebed on the 744, for SIN-MEL.

But not, unfortunately, on the A380 or 777ER.

Thanks for the quick reply mate. I actually came short on having enough points to upgrade from eco to business on the 747 only to be told that if I purchased miles I would lose the 15% online discount which was a shame but what can you do.

Trying to fly out SIN - MEL on Feb 2 +/- a day or two. I have 26768 kris flyer miles and the mrs has 24000 ish. So the dilemma is either to pay the extra $40 per 1000 miles to get to 35000 and upgrade to business or potentially get a free return flight for the both of us SIN - SAI.

Personally Id love to go Business and am still thinking we'll pony up there dollars but was looking at all possibilities. Any thoughts?

NDiddy,
I would only pay for the extra miles if it was a special occasion, and I think your honeymoon qualifies as a special occasion, and only for J or F, never Y. It's US$40 per 1000 miles, but you do get a lot more like lounge access, extra baggage, Bollinger champagne etc.

Other considerations:
The SQ 747 is about to be extinct, so it may be your last chance on the Upper Deck, choose row 17.
If it does get phased out or substituted, you may be on the newer J seat on the A380 or 777ER - bonus.
Tell SQ before hand that its your honeymooon, and they will have a cake for you on board - nice surprise for your SO.

Hope this helps !

Great info and plenty to consider - Appreciate you taking the time help me out with this.
Def using miles to upgrade to J - Wouldn't do it for Y either.
Thats some great bonuses that SQ have - Cake is a nice touch.
Was looking at seatguru a few days ago and yup would have asked for 17AC/HK but would be even better if it was on A380 or 777

The other thing I forgot to mention is that half my miles expire this month so Im def keen to use them up.

Now to convince the Mrs that the extra $$ is better spent on SQ than on a night accom - might be a hard sell but we'd love to end the trip with a little bit of luxury and pampering.

Just booked MEL - KUL with Emirates bus on points so I think we might have to just bite the bullet and do this.

Welcome to marriage and, of course, congratulations.

I spy.....
more J savers.
Ex the coat hanger, from around the 9th month of the Gregorian calendar.....

Sorry to be cryptic, I hope some of you can work it out. I don't wanna be flooded with PMs again ;)
But thanks always appreciated if you snag any (I did, 3).

Thanks for the heads up deluxeflyer. Managed to get 2 seats on the 747 (777 was waitlisted or not available). Hopefully the plane is made extinct before we fly and they put us on the A380 :)

Edit: And got on the upper deck seat 17 :D

Quick question guys - Would it be better to fly the 777-300 refiited (not ER) or the 747 from SIN - MEL? Both seem to have the 8 degree incline lie flat bed but not sure if they are the same type of seats if that makes any sense?

On the 777 it seems that the rows 11 DF 12 AC/HK all have the bassinet seat booked/blocked so not sure if these would become available but would be preferred. I currently have 17AC on the 747 so would happily stay where I am if the seats are the same.

Seats are different, in that 73A is a newer design, but much of a muchness really.
PTV Screen larger in the 73A.
Biggest difference is the cabin: Upper Deck 744 beats 73A. Feels more exclusive.

73A retrofit New Regional J:
New medium-haul Business Class
744 Spacebed J:
Singapore Airlines Business

Once again deluxeflyer thanks so much for your insight. I must admit I did like the look of the 73A seats so hence my reconsideration of the 747 J class I booked.

The reviews on airlinequality are quite critical of the bus class seats on the 747 and was another reason that prompted me to reconsider flights.

So in your opinion 747 > 73A (if ever so slightly)?

Horay finally 15 posts to enable PM's

I am not a fan of the Spacebed on the 747 at all. I would take the 73A personally. Newer and more
comfortable seats and infinitely better AVOD. I think the Spacebed is way past it's prime. Have flown the upper deck and while yes it's more exclusive, for mine the cons outweigh the pros for the 747.

When is the 747 due to be phased out??

Slightly, yes.
Re seats comparison,
For lounging, much of a muchness.
For sleeping: Spacebed. I have done many overnighters and always slept well.
NRJ has a ridge in the seat which I find slightly irritating in sleep position.
The Upper Deck has a higher crew to pax ratio ensuring even better service.

....and infinitely better AVOD.

AVOD selection is same as 73A. Only diff is slightly larger screen and redesigned graphical user interface.

That was going to be my next question as well

Was supposed to be 2009. Will remain as substitution metal for a while yet after it comes off SQ25/26.
