Tried booking J Classic award LAX-BNE
Used "Using Points Calculator" - says 96K for BNE-LAX.

Then when attempt to book it offers Y and J options (LAX-SYD-BNE).
When I chose J and go to Step 3 "Review" it says below "Note your flight from LAX-SYD is in Economy".
96K for Y for LAX-SYD and J (SYD-BNE)
?a deception. Is this typical?
(Almost booked it without noticing)

it is quite common when selecting non-direct routing. For such a routing the points cost is for the highest cabin class and if any segment does not have the highest class available the system will drop you to an available lower class.

Yes, you need to be observant and I am sure some people have made a booking not knowing they have selected a mixed-class itinerary.

I have found the same, it seems how far you are up/down the totem pole in status is what is available, but I don't recall being told this when I got me FF card. We gain our point via spend on cards mostly.

We have the points for J, want to go SYD LAX return in J next year, only way to get that is to go thru say SYD bris or bris via SYD, and going direct or on a 380 impossible.

So I guess have to call QFF flyer and lose points to book it, it's a farce,
