Some may think this is a dumb question but I need to find out....I am in the planning stage for J trip to LAX and want to know...should I fly from BNE in a 747 or fly from SYD in the A380.

BNE is my home port and the overseas leg of the journey is about 45 mins approx longer from SYD plus the trip to SYD. I've flown the 380 before so it's not a novelty ( although not QF metal )

So what does the 380 in J offer me better than the 747 in J

If it's an upgradable paid ticket and you want to enter the F upgrade lottery.......go to SYD.

We did this last month and won the lottery:D:D

Thanks, I had thort of the F class upgrade and at this stage I don't know how flush I will be for points as I want use some for some internal flights while I am there. It is certainly worth thinking about though

Why fly direct when you can connect. More SC!.

QF A380 better than 747 as the 747 you get may be the unrefurbished ones. A380 crew better IMHO. SYD J Lounge better. A380 quieter.

Downside is you got to transfer from Syd terminal 3 (Dom) to int.
Chauffer drive not avail I think for BNE-SYD//SYD-BNE leg. On return leg LAX-BNE leg departs terminal 4 so miss out on NewTBIT QF J lounge

BNE 747 arrives earlier so earlier connections to final dest.

SYD pax would prefer BNE pax fly from BNE for demand reasons.

The only reason I fly via SYD is the - Flounge/ extra SC/ upgrade / better cabin.....not sure if the J cabin on QF15 is the same as the A380? I.E. Skybed Mk11

If none of these things are in your zone of interests.....I'd go with BNE.

Thanks, I'm only Gold so I don't have F class privileges unless I do get an upgrade

If you don't have FLounge access I'd probably just stick with the QF15 BNE/LAX in that case. What dates are you looking at? You'll need to get in quick for "U" class seats which are released 355 days in advance - that could dictate what flight you'll get.

What internal flights are you looking at?

From time to time it may be good value to use QF ff points for US domestic flights but only if to purchase a fare was astronomical for that sector eg LAX/HNL can be ridiculously pricey sometimes so 25K QF ff points plus USD2.50 tax can be a bargain. For mainland USA & transcon flights you should be able to get for approx. USD150.00 so hang on to your points in that case.

And there's some absolutely delightful 747 crew & CSMs based in BNE. :)
