J Class on Domestic Qantas, Worth the upgrade?

Hi All

Having been lucky enough to snag the international spec Qantas A330 in the past on Perth to Melbourne runs (When travelling in J anyway), I've enjoyed the proper pods/skybed.

I have a flight coming up, Perth to Melbourne in a few weeks time, having checked out the seating map it appears it is the domestic spec aircraft we are travelling on. I am aware the quality is substandard in comparison.... Having phoned Qantas, I can request an upgrade for 10,000 QFF Points. The flight is 10am ex Perth so will be a Lunch Menu, sleep isn't something I'll be wanting to do.

Given this, in your (Far more experienced than I) opinions, is it worth the upgrade? Or should I save the points until next time I do the flight and snag an International Spec

Yep this is fully flexible etc

Definitely worth it on PER-MEL, arguably also worth it on shorter flights if you have long legs and/or don't like being squashed in besides complete strangers with other complete strangers reclining into your "personal space". Or like wine and want some for free before 4pm

For me, upgrades are valuable for flights over 2 hours and in particular, meal flights. PER to anywhere on East Coast is a given unless I don't have enough points

Of course, the reverse flights are better - longer on board

Is it possible to upgrade from an red deal PER-SYD? I have to travel to pert for work but the whole trip needs to be <$750 - the only way to achieve that is QF red deal. I am a VA plat but can't use those free upgrades because they are only from flex fares which would mean ticket cost of at least $1000. Even on the cheapest VA flight. Virgin say you can upgrade from savers but at at a cost of 30,000 pts which IMHO is a complete waste because an outright j reward is somethink like 33k plus 16$ in taxes.

If you have enough points and no immediate plans to use them then go for it.
10k is great value, even 20k is not bad for 4+ hour flight on A330 but I'm not sure I would use 20k for the morning service.

Sure you can, it will cost you 20k points compared to 10k on flexi ticket.

Perhaps you need to look at whether you can fly one way red e-deal (or VA saver lite) and the other way flexible. I try and upgrade the flexible fare with points or VA Plat upgrades. The one way in Y has to be in an exit row - again, I'm fortunate to be able to select on either carrier.

I have found some good sale fares on both VA and QF - my pricing on flights is fairly similar to yours...

QF Red e-deals are upgradeable domestically, just not (generally) internationally.

I phoned Qantas this morning and they've "Waitlisted" me... I had a look, J is about 50% capacity.... What do you think the odds of an upgrade are? (14 days before flying out) and how far ahead will they advise?


I would upgrade the MEL-PER route but it's on a 737, not worth it IMO.

I am on QF574 this from. Just got an email from qantas to upgrade. Is it worth it? Will the plane have the Skybed or recliners? I haven't flown QF in J domestically.
