Well, all my Christmases just came at once. I've been legitimately comped SG - and perfect timing too as I was about to reinstate my paid membership of the QP as well.

As regulars will know, my SFSC backside has been firmly parked landside since the end of 2010; thanks to an extended period of significant downward reductions in receipts directly attributable to a lack of sustained engagement of my skills (Kevin Rudd speak for I was out of work). Mercifully this extended period came to a halt early last year, and one has been gainfully employed by a fruit-adjacent global consumer tech firm - decipher that one yourselves.

Anywho, took advantage of QFF's Christmas 10x gift voucher promotion to put some money aside for some travel this year.

Fast forward to yesterday, when checking the usual monthly email I see that the status banner isn't NB. It's showing SG.

Thinking this was some kind of error, logged into QFF and it too stated SG. Service centre was closed, so went through to Domestic Reservations just to confirm what status they were seeing for me - and they too were seeing SG.

Still not believing this and being an honest guy, and despite the advice of flying friends; called the service centre this morning. The lovely agent looked up the records, and sure enough not only was I SG, but it was completely legit.

There was some targeting afoot in the Christmas 10x promo, and a select handful of QFF members who participated in it were targeted to receive complimentary status upgrades - which according to the email sent to service centre staff was to "allow those members to experience the benefits of the QFF program". Notes on my member record confirm that the comp. was for that promotion, and that these comps were approved at a pretty high level to boot.

So, not only can I put that $550 I was about to spend on QP back in my pocket, but I can enjoy some additional lounge access on my first real flight in over two years at the end of the month.

Gotta say, I'm pretty chuffed at this point :)

Think I should have got the missus or kids to buy some vouchers. You must have blown a heap on vouchers.

<Goes to check account for P1>

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

that's a nice little surprise for sure! and a major shift for QFF to be gifting status or perhaps they only did it for very heavy flyers in the past?

Brilliant ! :)

Lucky for you. Enjoy the QP :)

Congratulations - I love a good news story that benefits an AFFer :D

Whilst you may be feeling fantastic it goes against everything Qantas has been doing until now.

People 5 SCs short of a higher level were not comped and now they are gifting higher status based on a gift voucher promotion? Makes no sense.

Well done thewinchester.....I wonder if attending the QF do last year helped? After your real time reports on the event you deserve some recognition.

Makes plenty of sense. If they had a secret promo, say 5 people won gold status how is that any different to 5 WP's giving someone partner Gold for a year.

Difference with comping people is do it for one do it for 500. Having a promo (as opposed to a competition) makes sense as it has clear lines.
