Ad spotted this morning in LA on the Barnes and Noble site for QANTAS for LAX/SFO to Australia for US$349 based on return trip back to the US.
Hmmm, a great reason to to book from this side of the pond!

Also note this is the case from most destinations around world including the UK and Europe and SE Asia. Most of my airfares to/from SE Asia are once again purchased from SE Asia as they are much cheaper than the same airfare purchased from Australia. Sad but true....

Forgive the Naiveity of the question, but using flights in this case ex-US a case of a positioning flight from Aus, then using one portion ex LA

Same deal from Asia. Boyf still has his QF ff account registered with a Japanese address, so often on the same day as I get emails from Qantas advertising "special" fares to Tokyo for say around $1400 all up, he'll get an email advertising NRT-SYD-NRT for around 80 000 yen - i.e. < AUD1000 for the same travel period.

Grrrrrrrrrr.

I believe that this sort type of fare structure occurs from many locations to Oz.

It's cheaper to book from the US but to get that kind of fare you need to do a return.. Which means knowing when you want to head back to the US. I can't plan in advance! If you can then this is the way to go.

Or get a fare that has changes allowed for no charge, there are quite a few J fares ex asia that do so yet come out at similar prices to Y, giving you a window of 6-12 months for you to decide when you feel like going back

Or bite the bullet and get a one-way award fare to your preferred (cheaper) point of departure.

Yes, I do plan well in advance - in reality it's the easiest way to snaffle these cheap fares.

I currently have a booking US-OZ (in June) retuning OZ-US in late October. Another booking US-OZ (in early November) retuning OZ-US in Janurary (although this is on Air NZ).

I thought the flexible fares would end up costing the same as the non flexible (?) fares from Oz?

And getting to the departure point isn't a prob for me its just being able to plan that return date to the US. Because things are always changing..

Would be good to be in a situation where you can plan that far in advance though, I'm sure you do save money in the long run
