Hi Experts , we have an upcoming trip to Italy ( from Melbourne) and plan to take trains within Italy to move around different cities ( Como , Venice , Florence , Rome and Amalfi). Based on your experiences , can you please suggest if it is better to buy Eurail Italy Pass or book individual tickets and is there any benefit by booking the Eurail Pass ? Any tips or suggestions are most welcome.

Tentative itinerary ( trains)

1. Milan Malpensa to Varenna ( Lake Como)

2. Varenna to Venice

3. Venice to Florence

4. Florence to Salerno

5. Salerno to Rome

Thanks for taking time to read.

We have just book a Eurorail 4 day pass for travel in May.

Overall it does seem a bit cheaper especially if you are going to be using it for more days.

One thing to be aware of if you are hoping to use some of the high speed trains is the cost of required reservations is extra and the costs can add up.

One of the trips we will be doing is Paris to London on the Euostar and the reservation fee is 38 Euro

I’ve just done similar back n forth between Italian cities on trains over a 2+ week period

Rome/Naples/Pompeii/Florence/LeSpezia/Bologna/Venice/Trento (with some backtracking)

we decided the pass was not good value for our itinerary over the longer than a few days/week time period

We have several Italian train rides and I’ve just booked them all individually. We are only in Italy for a few days and the Eurail pass just didn’t make sense for us but YMMV

We book the express trains between the major cities in advance direct on the Trenitalia website. Typically Trenitalia which operates the Frecciarossa trains, offer more choices than the other major operator Italo.
We buy tickets in advance which work out a lot cheaper than on the day purchases. Regional trains such as Varenna to Milan are fixed price and can be bought on the day of travel.
