I had a flight booked from SYD > BNE this Friday, and was pre allocated seat 4D when the flight was booked. When I checked the seatmap at the time, row 3 was occupied, hence why I was given row 4.

However, when I went back in to look at the booking yesterday, I saw that row 3 had since become available. Gleefully I changed my seat from 4D to 3D. Seems like some kind soul wanted to give up their row 3 seat. Suits me! :)

More likely you have discovered the t-80 rule, no one gave up their seat ;). If you have status, the seat blocks come off at 80 hours before departure, when any half organised WP1 and CP has already organised their seats, leaving the riff raff to fill the void!

Does that apply to Virgin? :)

As for me, I checked my only DJ flight within 2 weeks. I only have 8 seats to choose from, but I think I'm happy with what I have

Personally, I prefer row 2 in business class due to the extra legroom ;) (Except for the BSI 738's which have good legroom in Row 1 but it impossible to know whether you will be on one)
