Is the ABC not Good Enough for QF?

How long was the section? You sure it wasn't a short segment where the ABC was reporting on something in China (especially political speeches etc.) where they may just be using a clip from CCTV, as that's the only video available?
I don't that was the case. When the segment started it showed the CCTV logo prominently then went away. In addition, the set the anchor was reporting didn't appear to be that of ABC but of another agency. Also I didn't see ABC logos anywhere. Could I be mistaken and it is in fact the ABC? Possibly, but from what I could tell it certainly didn't appear to be like ABC news programming.

Back in Canada it’s illegal for broadcasters to broadcast less than 45% Canadian content

Thats not really any different to Australia where: To comply with the transmission quotas set out in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (BSA), all commercial television licensees must broadcast: 55% Australian content between 6 am and midnight on primary channels 1,460 hours of Australian content between 6 am and midnight on non-primary channel.

However Qantas is not conisered a broadcaster, as IFE is not a public broadcast but rather limited to those on the plane.

I dont usually pay any attention to what is being displayed on tv on domestic flights, I bring my own entertainment downloaded onto my own device or a book.

QF doesn’t have any agreement with anyone but the ABC to provide news content. Probable guess - the ABC news broadcast on the flight had a segment about Chinese New Year, and used file footage from the Chinese broadcaster. When this happens that broadcaster’s logo is displayed on the screen, which may have confused you into believing it was that’s network’s content, when it was actually shared content.

I wish they would bring back Sky but I won't hold my breath for it to happen.

About 70% of Australians use the ABC in radio, TV or digital format at least once per week.

Sky’s viewers? Well their prime time TV gets about 30,000 viewers per night (0.1% of the population), and their YouTube views on Australian topics usually only get a few thousand views.

So Qantas has definitely made a smart decision with their choice of news partner.

It's happening again!!!!

Does QF still put on the inflight news bulletins tailored for them? I can't remember which network it was (Nine? Wasn't ABC) but liked how they ended with 'enjoy your flight'

Yes

Where are you getting that statistic? Also even if we assume that number to be accurate (which I highly doubt) that number implies making contact with ABC in any way including coming across an ABC article on Google News. I would be curious to see what the viewership figures are of ABC TV in general and news specifically.

Which may or may not be a lot of views. Frankly, I'd be surprised if more than a million Ozzies watch conventional over the air television daily, to say nothing of read the morning newspaper delivered to the home and anything else. Again, maybe my perceptions are completely wrong here but I get the feeling that most aren't getting the type of quality exposure to journalism be it in the paper or on the tube.
So Qantas has definitely made a smart decision with their choice of news partner.
Irrespective of if you are a ABC News fan or Sky News fan or aim for something impartial like CNN, what is the point of having these agreements if you don't take every opportunity to showcase it on your flights? The fact of the matter is AVOD in general and news programming in particular is a unique selling point of flying QF over say Virgin or JQ (that, free wifi and free checked bags).

I cannot comment on ABC specifically but the CCTV programming did appear to be tailored for the inflight format in the sense that it lasted about 30 minutes or so (I believe most TV news programming is usually an hour in length).

Could I be mistaken and it is in fact the ABC?

Without a photo to back it up, I would say almost undoubtedly yes.

Do you really think that Qantas would licence and push CCTV news programming on a SYD-MEL flight? It's not like the FAs can just bring their favourite show on a USB stick and broadcast it over the screens. Loading the content would be a significant operation and something that I cannot fathom happening (in 2023's geopolitical climate) without someone raising an eyebrow.

If this was actually CCTV content, it would have been a republished segment or supplied footage as part of an ABC bulletin as mentioned above.

I did not [take photos] as the flight was in its climb when the CCTV segment came on
it lasted about 30 minutes

These two statements don't add up. I'm seriously wondering if this thread is trying to bait a News Corp journalist into publishing a 'scoop'...
