Have just finished reading an article in Australia Business Traveler regarding the quickest way to obtain *A Gold; their pick is Aegean Airlines.

It seems you only need 20,000 tier miles per year (1,000 free when joining) to attain Gold status, compared to say SQ at 50,000.

Earnings in J are usually 200% on the likes of AC, ANA, BMI, LH, SA, TG, UA etc., so a trip on UA from SYD/SFO return in J virtually gets you there.

I may have missed something, but it seems all good from what I read.

Cheers,
Dee

It depends; *G can be earned for under $2k in the USA by flying instant upgrade fares while crediting to AirNZ ...

... of course, you do need to get to the USA in the first place.

Also, Aegean*G status lasts 2 years I believe.

I picked up Star Gold through Aegean by flying LX HKG-ZUR-VCE return in Discount Y plus SQ SYD-SIN-HKG One Way in Y.

You really only need to fly 19,000 miles with the introdu bonus, status is then valid as long as your account has activity (so not necessary to requalify at present). The FT A3 forum has a good sticky thread on all the ins and outs.

Seriously? 20K in one year gets me gold then I'll stay *A gold as long as I fling a few miles through Aegean? Thats it, I'm signing up. I've been pondering this for months but can barely understand the T&C as there seems to be big missing bits (to me) lost in translation.

It looks like 1.5 return trips in business for me (LHR-BRU-ROB) will do it ; however given whenever I fly *A it's always in business I see it as "losing miles" for 1.5 trips. With the demise of BMI I'm most likely going to credit to US Airways which although it will take me 5 return trips to hit Gold, I'll at least have half a J return flight Europe->Australia.

Yeah it's crazy cheap it is to earn and retain - from what I've read their business model is earning foreign currency through other Star carriers buying miles in their program.

So their business model is as solid as that of the Greek government / economy

Sort of like QF then ?? .... A FF (money making) scheme with an airline attached to it.

Looks like its targeted at Diamond Club members.

I got status matched to A3 *G in June and the expiry date of my Gold card is Dec 2015!!!!!

I think with the recent QF devaluing of points it is time to revive a thread such as this one.

Is *G on A3 the equiv of QF WP or SG ?

i flew MEL-CDG in Y w/ singapore credited to Aegean (over 20k points). Flights were around $2.2k

Just received my card in the mail with exp date 12/2016 - so just over 3 years membership.

Not a bad little weapon to have stashed for 3 years\

Edit: 3 years

Just to clarify:

Was that the only flight you credited to Aegean?

I assume it was return?
