Re: Is it possible to make payment of amount over the card limit by over paying the c

Just to be clearer, the OP has asked about two transactions :)

A payment to his credit card and a purchase transaction from his credit card.
Yes, and to be fair, it is the second of those transactions that has been asked about and that is being discussed.

But still I made an assumption in my previous post, which I shouldn't have done.

I think you are referring to an Amex charge card, not an Amex credit card.

Even with the charge card, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that Amex can authorise large transactions so long as you phone them to make arrangements beforehand.

I have disagree with you. The AMEX charge can make large unusual transcation but you need to inform them first. For credit card, I did check with AMEX and was informed: you can not make your balance as credit, otherwise the card will be automatically suspended.

I find this difficult to believe as it is nonsensical.

Good luck with telephone customer service! You may have to resort asking via email from within internet banking.

Yes, it is. But this is the truth happened to me, I once loaded $2000 on top of my credit and after that, not only the transaction was declined but also the card was suspended on the next day. The guy on Amex side told me if I'd like to make a transaction which more than limited, I need to split the transaction for several times and make sure each charge is under that limited, this means I have to wait until next day until bpay cleared in the account. This the stupid system which Amex is using now.

Re: Is it possible to make payment of amount over the card limit by over paying the c

Hi Guys,
Thanks again for the help, I spoke to the customer service (surprisingly was answered in less than 2 minutes! believe it or not!!!) and he answered my question without any hesitation, he knew this type of scenario from his past experience & just to be safe he put down a note on my acct.

Since the transaction has been processed smoothly NO FALCONS!!! ....

So yes I can now say this can be done at least with Citibank Platinum...

Regards,

Good news.

What's important is NOT the "credit limit", but it is the "available credit".

Re: Is it possible to make payment of amount over the card limit by over paying the c

Glad it worked!

I tried this years with an NAB card, assuming it would work, and got myself into trouble. I had a student card with a $1000 limit. I put $5000 into the card before I left the country, intending to use the card as my travel money. My online account showed I had $6000 available credit. When I checked into my hotel, unbeknown to me, the hotel put a $1200 block on my card, as I had used it to check in (apparently they do this to ensure you will have enough credit to pay at the end of your stay). This took me over my $1000 limit, even though my account balance was still very much in credit. The first I knew about it was when I tried to pay a $20 restaurant bill and my payment was declined. I had just enough cash to pay with no tip, and then had to call the bank from my hotel room at hotel international call rates to get it sorted out!

So always check with your bank before trying this.

Are you sure about that? I used to have a NAB card and still do with the same credit limited as you, I topped up 14K in order to pay my school fee
never had any problems with that. The most interesting thing is after that transaction gone through, NAB increases my limited for 5 times during the same day, from 1K-8K.

Positive. This was 8 years ago, so perhaps things have changed. Or perhaps the problem was that one single large block over $1000 - if I'd made a series of smaller purchases adding up to over $1000, everything might have been okay.

That transaction was likely blocked due to other reasons.

I can only tell you what NAB told me: it was blocked because I had over $1000 spoken for on the card and a $1000 credit limit, in spite of positive balance.

8 years ago:-| which means it was in 2002, I did my transaction in 2007 so it most likely that problem doesn't exist any more which is very good. I think NAB is doing the right thing nowadays due to they have changed so many fee rules in their banking productions, and of course they gain more customers just like me.:D

They sure have changed fees, but for some of us NAB customers we just see that they are only , shuffling the deckchairs. While they have cut fees and got you as a customer, I'm paying more fees for less benefit.

Given the decline in NABs poisition in the Australian banking scene they have to do something to convince people they are a people bank and not a business bank.
