I just looked up the possibility of using my QFF points for a return trip to Bangkok,

leaving about mid feb, for a week or so,

I did a seat availability for economy/business.

To BKK, flights basically every day,

from BKK, only 2 flights in 30 days,

is it school holidays over there or something??

and if so/not, am I boned???

Not school holidays over there, but many uni students return from holidays in late February for the commencement of the academic year in Australia, including Australian students who've been holidaying in Asia, and foreign students coming to Australia. Possibly also some increased traffic due to Mardi Gras (either from Europe via BKK, or originating in BKK). I have no data to back this up, just thinking about what might be affecting availability. Don't also forget that there aren't as many QF flights as there used to be.

It has been like this since mid Jan on any airline but the LCC's from SE Asia to Australia, whether using points for an award, or actually paying for a fare. My guess, like HardieBoys' - and it is just that - is that a lot of the heavy booking is due to the waves of students coming to Australia - the first being secondary students (including a sizeable number of exchange students) and now we're in Feb tertiary students.

Plenty of availability ex-SIN ........ via Perth :-(

February March period always shows full flights from Asia to Australia as students return after vacation. Also there could be the Mardi Gras effect.
Often it is hard to get a paid flight let alone an award flight.

bummer, I was thinking maybe ill go to Bali or something, but it might not be much better in flight availability

sigh..

Mid-Feb this year happen to coincide with Chinese New Year, the Asians might buy out all the available seats for their family reunion.

Not sure about March though.

Well when travelling from SIN to MEL a few weeks ago, Plan A was direct, Plan B was via KUL, PLan C via PER, Plan D via BKK..... you get the drift. Plan Z (which was only saved from being THE plan 2 days out) was a LCC from SIN -DPS then Pacific Blue from DPS -MEL ... seemed to be a lot of availability from Bali, on cheap(er) paid fares.

oddly enough I just checked, pretty much nothing from bangkok left,

however millions of flights from Bali to Australia, strange

Have a look at Jakarta.

That's where I fly to SYD from (on QF A330-300) when I can't get a decently priced flight from SIN/BKK (and you can get very good LCC fares to there too).

Just a thought, but works for me.

It is all strange as Feb/Mar is getting close to low season in Thailand.

Have you looked at returning via SIN?

I have just looked and there is availability for 2 people in economy SYD-BKK Sunday 14 Feb and returning SIN-PER-SYD Sunday 21 Feb. Pick up a cheap Air Asia flight BKK-SIN to get to SIN in time for 7:20pm flight. There is also plenty of availability for other dates in Feb returning from SIN plus business class availability SIN-ADL-SYD. Same number of points as the direct SYD-BKK option.

Also if you wanted to shift your trip to March there are CX flights back from BKK on 9 & 10 March.
