I was interested to fly Australia Sydney to Vienna and rang Air New Zealand as I have a FF membership and they wanted something like 180,000 [points for economy return ! Are we being charged higher points by going through ANZ for a Star Alliance ticket?
In the end I booked with Malyasian at 145,000 business return to Europe.

NZ has a different program based on how much you spend on the ticket, not how many miles it is. MH isn't part of *A, how did you get an award on them?

Anyone can join Enrich, the Malaysian Airlines FF programme for free- I joined then I transferred both Visa and Amex points across 2 weeks ago to purchase with points 2 bus. class tickets Sydney to Istanbul and back from Rome to Sydney in June 2007. That is whenI found itm takes ZAmex 2 points to equal 1 Malaysian fly point this year whereas in 2004 AND in 2005 we flew same airlines to Paris ands return for 1 Amex point= 1 Malaysian.
With Qanats- sounds good but then Qantas charge more points for the same journey-if it is 145,0-00 Bus class return to Europe or 110,000 economy,Qantas want lots more than that!

I don't understand. For 2 years now, NZ Airpoints has a different currency than other FFPs. It is Airpoints Dollars (aka airbucks).

For someone resident in australia (ie using aussie airbucks instead of nz airbucks) an economy award on OS SYD-VIE with no stopover is 1135 airbucks one way. It costs more if you change flights or stopover - every flight has its own award cost.

See partner award chart

Always wise to check all details before you transfer and or burn points.

Qantas charge 128,000 points for economy return to Vienna, and 256,000 points for business return. (One for one Amex points)

Given your 1 MAS point for 2 Amex points exchange the MAS flights cost 220,000 Amex points for economy, and 290,000 Amex points for business.

Availability on MAS might be easier to come by.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The smart way to do it is via Mileage Plus.

Only 120,000 miles for a C class ticket Australia-Europe-Australia.

Anything else is an expensive waste of time.
