have you considered that the genius bar does not comply with the NPP legislation when it comes to protecting your information? I imagine there would be considerable cost involved inserting up a system to comply. Hence for something like the genius bar they won't bother that means they can't take you're private information.
They should just be able to backup an iPhone, restore it and then delete the backup afterwards. I can't see them needing to do any more than that. Maybe I'm just not scared enough of the "privacy" bogeyman... :)

Apple store recently swapped out my iPhone 4 that I had dropped in a bucket of water completely free of charge, even though they expressly exclude water damage from offering replacement phones. I just went in there and fell on my sword and did the whole mea culpa thing (which is lucky because when they opened it up water literally poured out of it, so it would've been pretty embarrassing to lie about it).

When mrssimongr's phone carped itself I took it in and they asked about water damage. I knew it hadn't been dropped in water. They then explained about the water detectors... at this point I realised that baby spit is water based and babygr liked chewing on mummy's phone... that cost me $250...

Of course it is that simple in practice. But they would have to have policies and procedures, they'd have to train staff, they'd have to vet staff they'd have to audit compliance with the policy and procedure. Then they might have to have extra security on the genius bar computers, say individual logins vs no or general logins. So maybe they have just said easier not to deal with private information on the genius bar computers. Privacy bogeyman? With my CC just being compromised for the second time in 12 months, I can only say that there are people out there who want your identity.

My uncle also mention sweat as a source of water damage, more in relation to a standard nokia type phone. Hot day in Queensland on the phone, it makes sense.

The only thing that has me puzzled is why, Spruce, you are changing from one iPhone 4 to another iPhone 4. A 3 to a 4 I could get.Anyway, as others say, iTunes is pretty foolproof; otherwise your Telstra shop takes way all the angst.
Good question!!One is a work phone, and my working arrangements have changed and I always work on the devil you know principle......so I bought one for myself. Both are 4'sActually I also dropped the bloody thing and cracked the glass. The new one doesn't work properly either so that's being swapped over next week as well.......dear oh dear bad week.

I've also been lucky x 2 with free replacements, caught in a storm walking the dog with iPhone 3G, didn't mention the water damage and they appeared not to notice it, and dropped iPhone 4 on concrete with smashed screen, told the truth and given free replacement. In general I find Apple's customer service to be superior to similar tech companies.
