Placed the order for 64GB 3G and black leather smart cover at 6AM today (I might still cancel between now and delivery depending on funding options).

It was showing 2 - 3 weeks delivery (21 April) this morning.

This could be a long wait...

Anyone had hands on yet?

Mrs H has me locked in a room and has taken my credit cards off me. :p

I know the improvements over the 1st generation IPads will not really be enough to justify buying one....but I can't help myself.

I'd be very interested to see any feedback from those with 1st gen IPads and have bought the new one.

I know why one would want to obtain one, but why on earth would you want to smell it? :D

(Yeah I know, that description, too, is for a word of the wrong spelling, but I just say it as I read it, and that came to my mind...)

P.S. Another iPad/iPhone typing error?

Nope - though I am using an apple keyboard with my ThinkPad laptop ;)

It was just fat finger syndrome ;)

Mrscove and I were just talking about whether to get it in the US or here.

I would also think about availability - there are none in many stores at the moment. Obviously that will ease over time.

Ordered at 11:40pm last night (online store went up 20 minutes early). Was showing 2-3 weeks for shipping right off the bat :(

Ordered a 16Gb Black Wifi, will hunt around local stores and if I can get one local will cancel the online order.

My wife is happy because she will finally get to use "her" iPad 1 :)

Almost certainly what I'll do. Just watch out for state and city sales taxes.

I am probably going to get one when I go the US later in the year. It will be my first trip there, so I'm not that familiar with the state and city sales taxes - can you offer any further detail on this? Is there a lot of variation between states? Any thoughts on the cheapest place to buy?

I think state taxes vary by 8 - 12%. There are ways to avoid these by buying online in the US but it gets tricky. The US price conversion is not that different to Oz when you add on sales tax (US) and take off GST (Oz). Personally I would buy here (you get an Oz power lead as well dont forget) rather than spend time in the US saving a small amount (note $40 is a lot to some people but anyone dropping $1000 on an iPad probably is not that concerned about the $40) on your iPad when you could be saving a massive amount on designer kids clothes.

Thanks Simongr, I think you might be right and I should just look at getting on here. The price difference doesn't seem to make it worthwhile.

I was just frustrated last year when I tried to get one in SYD, London, New York and Atlanta with no luck...

Picked mine up from JB Hi-Fi today. Will post back with impressions.

I lined up with a friend after work today - we got there at 4.40pm (40 mins after they started selling) and she got the last 64gb 3G at JB Hi Fi in Albert St (Brisbane).
Noticably zippier and lighter. Screen is a tad better but not as good as the iPod Touch/iPhone.
I am buying mine on line through Velocity.

When I was in USA in July 2010, I tried about 5 different cities, totalling to about 15 different apple stores (including their company HQ) and could't get one. Turns out they were in stock at home.

It'll be the new factor. Screen on iPad 2 = identical to Screen on iPad 1 ;)

I'm going to sell my 3G iPad 1 and probably just go and buy a new one in the USA next trip (in a nice low sales tax state). I'm not in a rush for one, even though I'd like some new bling!

Intrigued by the number of people that were able to walk in and buy - might try that next weekend if mine hasnt shipped already...

Will try and pick one up when I'm in New York in a few weeks as they're considerably cheaper than here in the UK. Might try get to an Apple store over the weekend to have a play. Not sure which model to go for, guess I'll make up my mind when I'm standing in the Apple store.

Bought a 1st gen on runout at Big W two weeks ago, and love it. Plan is to grab a 2nd gen sometime soonish as well (possibly this weekend if I can find one), as Mrs MatF has declared the old one hers now (normally a technophobe, she has strangely warmed to the ipad - "that would fit in my handbag!")

Will probably get a 64G wifi (bought a Netcomm Myzone personal hotspot recently, which seems to work well with both the existing ipad and laptop we sometimes take away with us)
