Hi braintrust,
I'm trying to work out if its possible to transit internationally at both Sydney and Auckland with duty free liquids without them getting confiscated. Specifically, can you arrive into SYD on international flight and keep duty free after going through international transit point (airside) and then again at AKL after arriving on flight from SYD and transiting to another international flight at AKL?

Australia is generally compliant with ICAO standards regarding STEBs. If you arrive at SYD from a reputable international origin (e.g., LHR, SIN, HKG, DXB) and your duty-free is sealed in a standard STEB with the receipt clearly visible inside, you should have no issues.

However, New Zealand’s Aviation Security is notoriously strict and does not have a formal, blanket recognition of STEBs from all other countries for transit passengers. While an individual officer might occasionally let a sealed STEB from Australia pass, the official stance is that liquids from "other airports" are subject to confiscation.
