International size carry on bags on QF 747 upper deck

A basic question.

I know that the wheeled carry on bags won't fit in the overhead bins on the upper deck of a 747, so where do they get stored on the Qantas 747s when you turn up with one?

There is a storage area next to the stairs near the galley on most aircraft and this is where I have had luggage stored in the past, although it has been a while since I have flown QF J in my favorite upstairs cabin (pre Skybed).

Mine fits quite easily and it is all i take for anything up to 7 days. of course that means nothing to you i guess, can you consider a smaller one?

Note that the upper deck coat locker, located in front of the lavs at the rear of the cabin, are smaller on the 2-class configured aircraft than the lockers on the 3-class configured aircraft.

So getting access to bags stored in the coat locker during a flight can be more difficult on the 2-class aircraft.

The reason for this is the addition of seats 18JK on the 2-class config. There are no seats 18JK on the 3-class config.

I won't need access to the bag in flight, as I have everything I need in a briefcase that will fit in the side or overhead lockers - so it can go in the closet. On the other hand, I don't want to have to check baggage at any time on my 3 week RTW trip. It can add an hour each sector waiting for it and queuing.

I usually have a soft bag that can be squashed into any locker, but I am getting tired of carrying both it and my briefcase (both less than 7 kgs of course!) on the long walks between terminals. So I am thinking about getting a 45" wheeled bag, especially since reading about the best one to get in another thread. Two more questions now come to mind:

1. Will I have problems on other airlines (BA, LA, AA) in getting a 45" bag into overhead bins?

2. If space is a problem upstairs, I presently have 1J reserved (in a 2 class 747). Does anyone know if there is any extra space in front of row 1? I don't like climbing over (or being climbed over) when there is not enough space.

Generally not a problem in business class cabins. But if you have any small aircraft segments, especially on regional jets etc, you may have a problem.

Note that there are no overhead bins over row 1 on the QF 744's. But there is a locker in the nose between seats 1B and 1J.

You won't have any issues using the upper deck locker. Just ask the cabin crew about storing it there for the duration of the flight.

here's a tip for you:

when travelling domestic/international within/from the US get onto the plane as soon as you can when they call it.

the social norm in the US is to not check your luggage so people bring on the most amazing amount of/sized carry on. overhead locker space can be an issue, even in J. i find getting in early and placing my bag up at one side of the locker, hard against the side of the locker means i never miss out.

this week on Continental i saw a number of J class passengers have their 'carry on' checked by the cabin crew. the passengers were not too pleased.

so i reckon getting on right away is the go, just to make sure.

Actually I believe it often goes further than this. People carry on everything they can, upto and including the kitchen sink and then often have a heap more checked baggage.

You see people here talking about travelling with 1 or 2 by 7 Kg bags for a week or more and yet many yanks carry half their household away for the weekend.
